Thanks to long-time Komets fan Neal Colvin, we now know that Lloyd Maxfield's best of scoring two goals in nine seconds is not the all-time Fort Wayne record. Jim Boyd scored two in five seconds Jan. 5, 1972 in Flint. Somehow both goals were unassisted as he scored at 7:58 and 8:03 of the second period. There's no explanation of the goals in the story the next day. That mean
If that sounds impossible, consider this: Komets Director of Communications Chuck Bailey found an instance of one player scoring goals in two seconds! According to the 1980-81 IHL record book, Port Huron's Alex Kogler scored goals at 13:46 and 13:48 of the third period on Jan. 7, 1976. Against Saginaw.
Would not have guessed that was physically possible. Would love to hear how that happened, too.

OK, here's the memory from Doc Emrick who called the Port Huron game on radio:
No, I was there and remember it distinctly for a few reasons. Kogler scored on a close in play. The teams went to center ice for the face-off. Perhaps Alex was told to come off when he got a chance after the face-off, but--in the short 185 foot surface at McMorran--the center ice area was small. He picked up the puck from the face off and just blasted one from outside the line. He benefitted for:
1) the short center ice, 2) a hard shot, and 3) even alleged that night--a slow reaction from the timekeeper who may have been negligent in starting the clock. there would be
no contrived reason for him being slow...who expects a shot from center off a face off. But, it may have been just a general laxity that contributed to the two-second difference.
Regardless, I do remember it and even recall him shooting from right to left (on the radio dial of course).
Blake: Off-topic, I know, but I was wondering if you had ever heard of the Kawartha Komets? Looks like it is special needs Hockey:

Pretty interesting, just kind of wonder if someone affiliated with the organization has any ties to our FW Komets.
I don't know about that but a few years ago I found a team in Wisconsin also named the Komets. I can't remember now if it was a youth team or high school. I inquired but didn't get a response.
Gotta love Doc and his memory...
