Retired numbers

On another post a debate began about retired numbers, and the possibility of Colin Chaulk someday having his number 91 retired. The old rule was you had to play 10 years and they made exceptions for Steve Fletcher who played seven and one UHL game and for Reggie Primeau at eight years. I think they should stick with 10 years, which means Guy Dupuis would be a possibility and that is all until someone reaches that plateau again.

The Komets' current retired numbers:

5 Terry Pembroke; 6 Lionel Repka; 11 Len Thornson; 12 Reggie Primeau; 16 Eddie Long 18 Robbie Laird; 26 Colin Chin; 30 Robbie Irons; 77 Steve Fletcher. There is also 40 for Bob Chase, 58 for Ken Ullyot and 59 for Colin Lister.

To me, that should be it for a very long time. I'm a purist in that I think you have to go back to playing at least 10 years, and that means Guy Dupuis would be the last one to come up for consideration after this season. Retired numbers should be for exceptional players, and it's supposed to be very hard to achieve.

That's also a reason why the Komets re-started their Hall of Fame, to be able to include everyone else who has made sizeable contributions to the franchise.

What do you think?

As another debate, if the Komets had to name their five greatest players of all-time like is being done now in the Major League Baseball promotion, which five would you pick? That ought to keep you busy all weekend. LOL

Greg,
Regarding your earlier post about the Red Wings signing Hasek...

From what I heard on ESPN radio yesterday, it sounds like he came fairly cheap, something like a contract for under a million dollars, but loaded with incentives. While he's in his 40s and been injury-prone the last couple of years, if he can stay healthy, that could be a steal, provided someone can put the puck in the other team's net. I don't have as much trouble with this signing as long as they find someone who can add some offense.

I'm kind of excited because the Canadiens have all their key players re-signed, plus they picked up Sergei Samsonov as a free agent. Don't be surprised if Montreal is in the conference finals this year.

I agree with Scoops. The jungle was the jungle when we heard RR part 2, the chants, and the bells. If you want to bring back the jungle, bring back everything. I know it offends some people, but I think they are the minority. After all, they are at a hockey game, not a tea party. I never got into the OLE stuff this year. No excitement there. Bring back RR part 2 and watch the jungle,( at least the fans) come back to life. People just can't get excited by a nambie pambie song like OLE. Just my opinion.

I say RR part 2..Nothing campares to it, you just can't replace it.

Komet PA, I couldn't agree more with Jeff. I don't know what that garbage was that was played quite often after we scored, but we all hated it. It kind of sounded like shoot, score, but who could tell. That was awful.

It ain't gonna happen so you better come up with something new. You can't fight city hall on this one.

For some reason, it seems that the music has changed a lot in the last couple years. Other people that sit around us have commented on it too. It just seems that the old stuff that used to be played during the game was more upbeat and you actually knew the songs. I realize during warm-ups the guys like the harder rock, gets them pumped up but during the game, between plays, I'd like to see us going back to the old songs that were always played at the game.

Next thing you know PETA will be marching on MCC grounds because the eagle is being unethically treated by the Paul, the zamboni guy. Which by the way....if I understood Icy's chirping correctly....its almost embarassing at some of the stuff he receives grief about.
Real life causes, "it sets a bad example for the kids" excuses, and politically correct axes to grind don't really have a place in the sporting arena. I just really bothers me that "the song" gets some people so bent out of shape. When you hear the decibal level when its played its hard to imagine the people that like it are in the vast minority. I look around and see 7000 people going crazy and lovin' every second of it.

Scoops, it doesn't really matter. The Frankes paid their money, they get to make the choice and they decided. So let's move on and pick a new one. I agree Ole doesn't work. I'll bet there's one song out there than when someone suggests it, everyone is going to say Why didn't we think of that earlier?

We just have to come up with that song.

If anyone remembers the Hartford Whalers they had a theme song called brass bonanza. it even has it's own website brassbonanza.com. it might be cool to play that (or maybe not). I like the whalers so I enjoy it. But if I had to vote today for a new song I would go with Zombie Nation.

Glad to have all of your commments. It's all about keeping the favorites and finding some new gems too. We are always trying to keep things fresh and sometimes after 38 games it gets to be a grind and you do get in a bit of a rut playing some songs, but I am willing to listen to your suggestions if they can really be helpful. I do have around 2000+ songs on the game computer and I try to rotate as much as I can and brought in some more organ music the past few years for the hockey purists. So keep thinking about the parameters I set and see if you can come up with something we might be able to use. No promises, but I appreciate the input.

I agree with getting rid of the Ole song, it was kinda boring. The Cotton eye Joe is just plain awful and makes us look like a bunch of hillbilly red-necks. I like the idea of Thunderstuck though.

Blake

Cotten eyed Joe makes us sound like Rednecks but saying you suck and we're going to beat the h--- out of you doesn't? Hmmm.

Well while you debate on what numbers to retire and what songs to play I want to know who is signing and who is not!!! Elmira just added a scorer and toughness by signing Frank Littlejohn. Who do we have in that department. And the Q & A you had with Bingham Blake sounded like he was feeding you the "Company" line from the Frankes...Tough but Smart....

Why don't you guys just buy pro wrestling tickets? Or UFC or boxing.

chris
Tue, 08/01/2006 - 12:51pm

You know the You Suck thing doesn't really bother me, but there are times when it makes no sense at all and it definitely makes us look like complete a**es

#1 UHL All Star Game. When the West scored there it was. Why at an All Star game?

#2 When we won the Cup in 2003. After Dusty's goal. We won the Cup and people yell You Suck.

I guess it's fun to yell it, that must be the appeal. But there are times when it is completely asinine.

JungleMonkey

Stop being a Franke apologist Blake. Why resort to the UFC and Boxing line when all people want is a physical hockey team? Nobody is asking for 19 Jeff Worltons. We would like some big physical players.

Komet PA: What about Gorillaz "Feel Good Inc." or Daft Punk "One More Time?"
Guys, if you think we have it bad with "Cotton Eyed Joe", you should be in Dayton when they play it. People do this bizarre, running-man style dance which they put up on their video screen.

MJ, thought about "One More Time" but it's one of those songs that works better after the goal scoring gongs. People would get sick of it pretty early if they heard it alot. Not sure how many people would know The Gorillaz but I like the song. I'll give it a closer listen.

I know Blake! If we had as tough of a team as Robbie Nichols always has we could just skip the playoffs every year.

Blake,

You said the Frankes paid thier money and they get to make the choice. The Frankes wouldn't be paying thier money if the fans didn't pay their money. The ones that boo hooed about the You suck song, are the ones that go to maybe 1 or 2 games a year. The fans that go to most of the games are the ones they should be listening to. And if the You suck song is such a problem, how come in the playoffs they'll throw that song in there when we come from behind to win a game? Obviously it gets the fans going crazy which in turn gets the team going.

Chuck
Tue, 08/01/2006 - 3:27pm

The answer is simple. There are no group sales nor soccer moms at the playoff games to complain and give the Frankes heat for playing it. You only see the season ticket holders and true hockey fans at the playoff games.

No matter how many times I play Jungle or R n R part 2, it won't bring anyones ideal of the Jungle back. It was an innocent time long before the internet. When our team was the biggest and baddest in the IHL that no longer exists. I was only trying to give someone a chance to be creative and let me see if anyone could possibly have a solution since nothing I play after a goal is going to work because everyone is so dead set against it that nothing will work. I am doing this to see how bright you all can be and see if you can be creative without griping about the past. It's a new coach so you can't complain about that for the first 2 games and lots of new players. I did this on my own accord and just was accepting ideas from you on what to play. That's all.

Blake, I'm sorry I asked.

Wow, is the heat getting to everybody or what.... Lets pass out some popsicles sit on some bags of ice and chill out... Everywhere else Bingham has been he has given the fans the type of team they can be proud of, so I'm not too worried.

PA, I think Thunderstruck is a good one ( it really worked in Vegas...) Hells Bells is another good one, and of course these are re-treads... Give us some time and we will come up with some good suggestions. I myself would like to hear a lil classic rock played...(love CCR)...It might even be neat to hear what the players would like to hear when they score a goal, kinda like when a baseball player comes to bat, of course that might be a nightmare for you to keep straight lol...give us time...

Easy Larry...don't make us out to be such awful fans. We all here want fun, excitement and entertainment. So what is the big deal if a group of fans enjoy celebrating after a goal and not have to hear that soccer song OLE? People voiced their opinion on here about that song and you and Blake both want to bad mouth the opinions that people have on the issue. I think it is time that this blog goes back to a read only type thing where Blake can post his article and we can read it...oh...that would be the newspaper now wouldn't it? LOL

We all respect your opinions and judgements on what songs to play and we know that in the end it is up to David and Michael. Stop telling us that. We get it!!! I for one think that you do an excellent job at what songs you play at the games Larry and it is always the first thing that my family from out of town comments on when they come to 4-5 games a year. They always say...you can't go anywhere else in pro sports and walk away entertained with the music that is played and the hockey that is played like that in Fort Wayne. That is a huge compliment to you Larry. I hear that everytime I see my brother and his wife that drive up from Indy because they are stuck in a town that has crap for hockey now.

So take it easy Larry...no one is criticizing you or your work...you do an outstanding job. The old saying goes....opinions are like A-holes....everybody has one. And on here...some have 2...3....50?!?! Keep up the good work...and Hey....You Suck!!!!LOL
