Road hazards

In the past, I've dreaded the drive back to Fort Wayne from visits with my family in Indianapolis for various reasons: It was snowing, it was raining, I was tired, I had chores to do when I got home. Today, I found another reason: Worrying about whether a sniper might pick me off on I-69. Early this morning, my sister and I were talking about the two sniping incidents on I-65 in southern Indiana, and by the time I was ready to leave, there was news of the two on I-69 near Muncie. Thre was speculation that all four were related. Gee, do you think?

Thinking rationally, I knew there was far less chance of getting shot than there was in getting in an auto accident, even if the snipers decided to do something in the middle of the afternoon that is best done at night. But that doesn't mean I didn't eye every single overpass on the way home.

The sniper who terrorized the Columbus, Ohio, area in 2003 and 2004 managed to kill only one person during his spree. Whoever's doing this got a death in the very first effort. Hope that isn't a portent.

Sadly, this scenario runs the gamut of possibilites from prankster kids with a Red Ryder BB rifle (and they CAN go through a windshield under the right conditions) to some mental case with a paramilitary urge to "remove the infidels" with some .308 rifle complete with night vision scope, brass catcher, and supressor.

With the way the highway is laid out, the surrounding "high ground" makes for good cover, so no overpass is needed, but access to roads behind these forested berms are already being gone over with a LOT of fine-toothed combs.

There was a brief time when kids were chucking hunks of conrete from overpasses onto vehicles, and thankfully, that "fad" passed, but not without causing some SERIOUS injuries and accidents.

You want to shoot at moving vehicles?...join the damn Marines, let them FIRST make a MAN out of you (instead of the coward you currently are)...then go overseas and point that weapon in the RIGHT direction, at the right targets.
