Tailing the Komets

Roster moves

The Komets have moved Olivier Legault to the non-roster spot so they retain his rights, and they have waived Maksim Shirokov. Shirokov will go through the IHL waiver draft at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Komets General Manager David Franke informed the players this morning.

As for Legault, Franke said, ``We will retain his rights for the rest of the year and into the summer and we have explained to him that we still want him to be part of our team next year and he definitely wants to play here again next year. We just explained it was a numbers situation.''

Franke said Legault informed him he will remain in Fort Wayne and continue to be a part of the team off the ice.

Shirokov is on the 21-day injured reserve list with a deep bruise on his foot after being hit with a shot two weeks ago. That means he would not be eligible to come off until April 25 if he is selected in the draft. Even if he is not selected in the draft, the Komets lose his rights.

Playoff dates have also been announced and are the same dates that I listed as tentative last night.
Game 1: Friday, April 18 in Fort Wayne, 8 p.m.
Game 2: Saturday, April 19 in Muskegon, 7:30 p.m.
Game 3: Sunday, April 20 in Fort Wayne, 6 p.m.
Game 4: Wednesday, April 23 in Muskegon, 7:30 p.m.
Game 5: Friday, April 25 in Fort Wayne, 8 p.m.
Game 6: Saturday, April 26 in Muskegon, 7:30 p.m.
Game 7: Tuesday, April 29 in Fort Wayne, 7:30 p.m.

The Komets have also added an amateur defenseman to their playoff roster, Ken Dufresne, who is 6-0, 190 pounds. He played for the TerreBonne Cobras of the Quebec Junior AAA League and led his team's blueliners in scoring. He'll arrive in town tonight, have a physical tomorrow and practice on Wednesday.

I can't say I'm too surprised at who was let go, I had forgotten about the non-roster spot option. Hopefully we'll see Legault back here next year.

Good luck to Maksim its just sad we had to go through this.

Message to the Frankes get rid of this rule. It is crushing to the players and fans who have stuck by the WHOLE team the whole year long. To have to make room for amateurs at the end of the season is a great idea, however to mess with a teams dynamics right as they head into the playoffs could be crippling.

One last comment as a fan, I almost bought Maksim's Jersey from the auction, however I was able to get a different one instead. I would have had no problem with taking Maksim's if i was not afraid that he might have been the one cut from the team. I feel sorry for who ever ended up with buying that jersey since he is no longer on the team. I know I would have been upset if Saidchev was the one who was cut. (since I ended up with his)

It is too bad it had to come to this with Legault, but he is more than likely will get other chances to play in the ECHL or CHL next season. I would hope he would return next year, but I am sure he will look for greener pastures. I think it is a class act for him to stick around the club...

i was almost certain that Durdin would be the one on the way out! I am also courious as to how the goaltending situation plays out. I would start with reiter instead of boucher. Boucher acts like nothing is ever his fault and looks to yell at someone after a goal is given up. That could hurt team chemistry after awhile ecspecially in the playoffs!

I approve that previous message only under protest. Her boyfriend threatened to beat me up if I didn't treat her right. LOL. (Seriously inside joke).

That would be so great if the News Sentinel would get the suites for the bloggers and we could blog all game long in the suite. What a win win situation!

I'm thinking maybe someone should place a silent auction bid on a suite.

What does a suite go for? I was just wondering if you could get 26 friends together and divide it evenly.

once again its not the rules that really need changed. the komets took advantage of the rules and kept extra players all year long, knowing they could only have 19 at the end of the year, but it workded out well as it kept some guys rested and others got a chance to nurse injuries. as far as legault going up, i doubt it. he can fight and the rest of his skills need a lot of work. he definitly needs a year or two in aa to improve before even thinking about going up. maxim was an ok player but sure didnt live up to the hype when he got here. i think it was said that he wouldnt be here long cause his talents were far superior and he belonged in the ahl...........so much for getting someone on the advise of another player, but at least we got him out of the hell hole he called home.
