Tailing the Komets

Roster updates

Nick Boucher, Brad MacMillan and Konstantin Shafranov will be in the lineup Friday night, according to General Manager David Franke. Rick Varone and Brandon Warner they aren't so sure right now. Varone may be moved to 30-day IR. Danko Mironovic is also likely to be ready to play. The Komets won't announce any definitive roster moves until Friday. X-rays on Warner's angle were negative.

They are expecting Tim Haun to miss the games this weekend on suspension, but the league has not`announced anything yet. Parris Duffus will likely be the emergency back-up again. Because the Komets were playng short-handed on Sunday, they had a spot to activate Duffus. They released him today since emergency back-up goaltenders are on 72-hour contracts.

Did he stop there? Or did he contine with.... "since none of his teammates seemed interested in doing anything to defend him"? =)

Warner can't seem to catch a break when it comes to staying healthy.

Haun should get a game. Maybe two. Larry should get one for excessive foolishness after the "fight" that he started wearing a mask and full goaltending gear. What a dope.

Weird that they haven't announced anything yet. Aren't these things usually handed down on Monday? But I do see that Larry has been named Goalie of the Week. Oh joy.

Sterling also got an award for worst theatrical presentation of a post-fight "gunslinger" dance...

Why on earth would they reward Sterling like that?! He got a game misconduct for his actions Saturday night, did he not? I don't care if he stopped 1,000 shots the week before that. He's not the Goaltender of the Minute, in my eyes. What a....well, I better stop now. He's just the latest in a long line today. I hope he tries to run MY butt over with his car....bring it on, Sterling. My kid should have hit him with that flagpole when he had the chance. Lucky for him I raised that boy to be a good kid and a good sport.

I've always been taught that hockey players have memories like elephants , with that being said let's see if the K's make "LARRY" pay the price for his little episode!!!!! Let's just see how bad this "gunslinger" really is........

Adam- Your correct about the hockey players memories. The problem is there appears to be a lack of heart in wanting to defend Tim Haun or other players who needed defending. Mac it appears is the only guy willing to take on that roll. I can not answer the why part of my statement so do not ask me. I think it is something that needs to be addressed by the coach and the players. You can not pay players to have the heart or the personal pride of sticking up for their teamates. They know first hand that they could be the next guy somebody takes a run at. They are the ones who just have to make that stop. One thing we all know: If they don't defend or stick up for Boucher he will go after them (teamates) himself.

Dennis, I agree with you. You answered your own question though. They don't care and none of them are willing to do the dirty work it takes to make this a complete team. (a couple are willing Mac, Schrock, Stayzer) That includes playing the body, checking, and sticking up for teammates. I would love for each of these guys to listen to a group like Boyce, Bawa, Fletcher, Chin, Richison, etc. tell them the rules they lived by 15 years ago in the IHL when players looked at the goaltender the wrong way, shot a puck after the whistle, took a cheapshot, hit after the whistle, whatever the play was, the players on the ice were accountable for what happened on the ice, or they weren't on the team anymore. It didn't matter if you were a skill guy, role player, goalie, sniper, whatever you were, if you were a part of the team, you played your butt off first of all, and you took care of your teammates when need be. This group of players this year are playing SOFT. They make Mr. Whipple want to squeeze them.......the Snuggle Bear is jealous.......

Just a few things I noticed and wanted to pass along...

1. After 21 games our top goal scorer is Thomas with 7

2. After 21 games our top penalty minute player is STILL Brad MacMillan with 57...in 6 games... Can you guess without looking who is second?

3. After 21 games as a team we are a -5

Some observations/opinions... I think Bertrams +7 is more an indication of Phillips strong play than his... At this point, of our vets I believe that only Chaulk, Shafranov, and Stayzer have played with heart while showing they want to be here... Brandon Warner = Injury prone. I know he's local and loved; but I think there are probably affordable healthy options to take his place on the roster... I thinks its been a blessing of sorts to be where we are at in the standings at this point in the season with as little heart as this team has shown...

Whether its thru benchings, pink slips, or that little hypnotist from the Natural, this organization needs to find a way to stoke the internal fires and start producing on the ice and continue this franchises proud traditions...

MR. That is dumb! I use that term as a term of endearment. If I used the term "Stupid" well, you can't fix stupid. It is not personal at all. I don't know you from -- I was going to say "Adam" but he is a blogger and I don't know him either. I am sure you were saying that toung in cheek. He could never be a Komet for a whole host of reason. I said something like that before we got Scott Gruel. I had to chew on those words for a while. At least Scott wasn't a head case like Larrrrry!

Yes, but Scott was a heck of a player. We already have better goalies than Larry, so it wouldn't be an upgrade, thus pointless

I think it is up for debate whether Sterling is not as good as Boucher or Haun. In my opinion he is more talented than either Boucher or Haun. The year they went to the finals, Port Huron had very little defense. I doubt he would ever want to come to the Fort since he plays so close to home now but just saying, all of those things you find annoying about him now would be the same things that make him a fan favorite to his home team. Reference Jim Duhart, Tyler Willis, Lance Galbraith etc.

MR S--I knew and know what you meant. I just do not see him in a fireball. We could debate his ability or lack there of. I think we would agree on his lack of class don't you?

The K's have had thier fair share of classless players in the past....

MR SNUFFLUPUGUS
Mon, 12/14/2009 - 10:15pm

Dennis it was not you who said that Larry wasn't an upgrade so I wasn't referring to your comments. Lack of class? Maybe. I remember guys like Lance and Morency putting on gesturing shows to the crowd and people seemed to love it. No doubt Sterling is a bit of a hot dog. But he is entertaining and a good goalie and for all of the abuse he has taken from fans in Fort Wayne, I think he has actually embraced it for the most part.
On another subject... when ISN'T a slash at least in some level an attempt to injure? I guess maybe when you are trying to swat at an opponents stick but for the most part, a slash occurs when you are ticked off at someone and therefore to one degree or another, your intent is to hurt them.

JR

All I know is that if there is a fine to go along with the suspension every Komet
player should open thier wallet except for Haun and make sure it gets taken care of...

MR SNUFFLUPUGUS
Mon, 12/14/2009 - 10:49pm

Dennis (and everyone else) let me put it in a perspective from a Port Huron fan.
Port Huron fan has no idea of the day in/day out perceived lack of toughness on the Komets that Komet fans love to talk about. All they see is the enemy goalie taking a slash at one of our players and my goalie Larry Sterling coming to the defense of a teamate. Then after "taking care" of things, gesturing to pump up the crowd. If you are a Port Huron fan, Larry Sterling is a hero. To Komet fans, he is classless and a showboat. I am a Komet fan but I respect Sterling for coming to stand up for a teamate. It isn't his job to care if the Komets don't have any goons to take care of things. He saw the opposing goalie attempt to injure a teamate and he responded.

Probably not the most popular thing to write, but I really like Larry and believe many on this board would like him if he was on the team we rooted for...high energy, feeds off the crowd, good skills, plays with emotion....gee, the very things the 2009 Komets don't have as much of this year.

I also have seen Larry as a class act. He's given two goalie sticks to kids on the glass, including after THE game 7 when that wouldn't be on my mind as I came off the ice after a game like that. He's also flipped pucks into the crowd in warmups, to a couple of adult guys who had a sign with his name on it. Even had a smile on his face as he did it, and I think they sign had some about Port Urine and a picture of Larry on it.

He's good for the game and minor league hockey in general. I enjoy him every time he comes to the Coliseum, even when he's on the bench. Stan has used him well, even though I wish he was on the ice more when the Komets played at home.

I'm hopeful we can pick up 5 points this weekend and get back on track.

Mr. Snuf........I'm sorry, you say can whatever you want about Larry, but he most def isn't as good as Boucher..... Haun, maybe I'll give you that. Boucher beat him head to head not once but 3 straight times in the finals in the first year, and he was TERRIBLE the last quarter of the season last year and into the playoffs when it counted. After looking into the stats, it looks like head to head he has only beaten Boucher 2-3 times since they have been playing head to head. Nuff said.........oh, wait....Goalie of the year, all star and runner up league MVP last season. Now, Nuff said.........It's like comparing a guy that's done it all in this league to a have not (and I'm not saying Sterling isn't good-he is-just better than Boucher by any means-the proof is in the pudding as they say). Larry just hasn't won or done anything to push his team over the hump. And it's not like Port Huron hasn't had a great team over the years.

I would even say that Mior was a much better goalie then Larry and his AHL call up proves that.
