Roy Chin Golf outing coming up

After a 49-year career, Roy Chin retired from officiating hockey games.  His pupils are scattered throughout the Midwest and yes, even in the NHL.  Roy taught more than how to officiate, he coached the character of the official.  Patience, alertness, lack of arrogance, and open communication are at the core of success as an official.  Roy was inducted into the Indiana High School Hall of Fame in 2002 and, in 2003, he received the Chet Stewart Award for lifetime achievement from USA Hockey.  And all that knew Roy found he was a great friend who carried what was great in all sports.  That pure spirit and fairness for all to compete and enjoy the game. Roy passed away in 2009.

This year's golf outing will be held July 9 at Lakeside Golf Course with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Registration starts at Noon with a best-ball scramble format. The fee for golf and dinner is $65 per person and includes 18 holes, cart included, beverages and snacks, sponsor contests and awards and raffle prizes. For more information on how to register, call Bill Erickson at 260-241

Thanks, Blake. Good to hear from you and I'm glad your "absence" is caused by a busy schedule, not anything serious as far as health, etc. ( You know what I mean).

Geez, GameMisconduct! I don't like the idea of the league LOWERING the salary cap. I hope that is just a rumor. They should actually raise it a bit as they are most certainly in a competition for talent with the ECHL. If a team can't make it with the cap level of last year, then lowering it will just delay the inevitable and weaken the league talent wise.

I sure was naive. I thought it was just the IHL and the problems of trying to have a regional league that caused so much uncertainty. I've learned that this league, while I understand why the Franke's entered it, has a whole boatload of problems the IHL never had to consider.

Unfortunately, I guess that if a team can't handle the finances of a season, it doesn't belong in any league.

It's time to cut bait with some of these teams because the quality of play has a direct influence on attendance, which has an influence on the bottom line. Lowering the pay scale would seem to have the opposite effect when it comes to raising attendance. It's just another sign of weakness for the league.

Geez, it must be me and my backwards thinking.

I don't think talent will drop. Don't forget that with teams dropping like flies all over the place there will be talented players out there.
Will they play for less money? Some will and some will choose to retire. My opinion, those who retire are doing this league a favor and making room for players motivated by something other than hanging on for a paycheck.

Sorry, Snuff the best players are motivated by being rewarded as professionals. The best players are not going to take all the abuse necessary to succeed for less pay.
You will get your wish, young guys with no future anywhere else, either in the game or out.
The best players will simply take the work ethic that got them where they are in the game and use that to make a living doing somethng else.

Mike I strongly disagree with you. The players who still hold out hope of that AHL (or NHL) paycheck have alot more to play for than the CHL/ECHL salary.
The vets who are only hanging on because the CHL paycheck means they don't have to sell insurance all year round I'll be happy to see retire.

Looks like you should become a sponser of a USHL team, Snuff...I hear Marion is a great place to live!

Snuff, who was the last guy in Fort Wayne holding out hope for a job in the AHL? Mirasty. NHL are you kidding? The good players are already there my friend. The guy has to sell insurance to put food on the table. Give the noggin a shake Snuff.
Let's go a little further, what player in the entire CHL has a bona fide chance of playing the next ten years in any league higher than the CHL?
Answer not many.
Know why you aren't going to get all those young guys? They are smart enough to know that they haven't got it.
Go sell insurance.
By the way I don't know what you do, but selling insurance is not a bad way to make a living. And with the new salary cap that is the only way you will keep players.
Oh, and Snuff don't shy away from taking your shot at Colin.
You would be letting all your fans down.

Now Mike, why did you have to make this about Colin?
But since you did, fine.
I think he was horrible down the stretch in key moments. He took penalties that would make Ben Eager proud.
If he is back next year ( and I have already said I was fine with it) then I hope he takes a look at the mistakes he made, gets ticked off and comes back here next year with a huge chip on his shoulder. If he does then I think he could be a top 5 player in this league.
Now to your other points...
Curadeau thought he was an AHL golden child. Hodgman if he was a tad bit faster would stick at that level. Mirasty is a joke and a waste of a roster space for any team that doesn't need a circus clown to put fans in the stands.
Insurance sales is a tough way to make a living. So is playing minor league hockey. Given the choice of the two I think most would hang on to the hockey for as long as they could. Especially if they are not married or in some cases because they are married and it gets them out of the house. That goes for players and coaches.
But lets get back to your theory that the "good players are already there" . Players come and go every year. Spots open up at all levels. The CHL and the Komets have to decide what they want to be. If they are a developmental league then a lower salary cap and fewer vets will be fine. There are PLENTY of good players out there under the age of 30 that can fill out a AA roster. And there are PLENTY of guys who will take less money than the glorified 30+ crowd for a shot to play professional hockey. I bet a guy like TJ Sakaluk would love another shot at pro hockey in North America. The players are out there. No player including your friend is not expendable. If this league wants to be a place that caters to the "hangers on" then fine, be that. If it wants to be a true developmental league then those players should be limited and the rosters should be filled mainly with 22-28 year olds. And folks don't give me the USHL crap. Those are teenagers and the hockey there is actually pretty good. But there is a big difference between watching a 19 year old and a 23 year old.
Ok, the book is long enough. Minds will never change.
The doom and gloom predictors will wave the "I told you the obvious so" the vet lovers will want their favorites back every year. Nothing will ever change.
But it is the off season........

Mike I do have a question so I can understand better your perspective on things.
How long before Colin came to Fort Wayne were you a fan or active follower of this franchise?

Mirasty has made more money than alot of your favorite Komet Koasters & gives more than 71%. Also Mr.Suff. who is your favorite players? just wondering.

Mightbite that is a good question. I don't get really get attached to players especially at the minor league level.
Eric Boguniecki, Colin Chin, Ian Boyce, Jonathan Goodwin, Lee Davidson, Pokey and (GASP) Colin Chaulk are some guys that I have enjoyed watching over the years.

NHL...no question Doug Gilmour was my favorite skater and Mike Palmateer my favorite goalie. These days I like Ryan Kesler, Jerome Iginla, Tim Thomas...

Snuff, we all knew who the Komets were and a little about some of their big rivalries. I attended some games in Port Huron when I was young.
A pal of mine played in Dayton in the 60s.
We were all trying to make it to the next level so we knew the leagues and teams. No doubt, I have been a more active fan of the Komets since Colin has been there.
I was planning to travel down for a few games even if Colin wasn't playing. I love the atmosphere in that Rink.

Mike, we would love to have you! It's so great to hear from some that might not be as close to the team to get a different point of view. Keep posting...

Thanks, Hoss, I will. Snuff is a great fan, we just just don't see eye to eye on some things. For the past several years it has been the health of the league that is the most critical issue. Let's hope they can get things going and hockey will be played forever in your city.
That way Snuff and I can spar and still enjoy a great tradition.
