Tailing the Komets

Smith out

He suffered a concussion on Friday night's hit. He has not been placed on injured reserve yet. The CHL suspended Ryan Palmer for one game for an illegal hit to the head and he's sitting out tonight.

Offthepost...get a clue? Really...playing with 8 forwards isn't going to cut it. You don't even have enough for 3 lines. Do the math Offthepost, that won't work. Players need to be brought in, and now IS the time to do it.

Actually, it's pretty amazing how many times over the years the Komets have played short-handed and then played their best games.

It isn't about a game or two,it is about the rest of the season. With the concussions that Auger and Smith have, there is no telling when they could come back. Do you stand pat and hope it is sooner rather than later, or do you go get a couple of players and then possibly have to release someone in the future. I guess each person, fan, reporter, etc. will have their own opinion. Maybe I'm more proactive than others. Why wait? Go get the job done, and get it done now.

If only it was that easy. OK, who do you get in the middle of the night and into Missouri for this game? There really aren't many options to sign someone and get them there in time for the game so you're kind of stuck with what you have. It happens abour four or five times a season where a team skates a player or two short. It's not that big of a deal, especially with a team full of young kids. Evansville skated the entire first half short-handed every night. It happens, it's just part of the game.

When Auger got hurt, they activated Mele, so they've only been short-handed last night and tonight. They are still rolling three lines. They don't have an extra forward is all. If it gets to be a problem, they can start skating with five defensemen and use the extra one as a forward.

Now, by Friday they should be back to a full lineup one way or the other, probably bringing in one forward at least.

Now imagine all through the 1960s when the Komets played with only 12 players each night every night.

I never said they had to get someone overnight. However, they do need someone.

As for the 1960s, I'm sure the other teams also played with only 12 players.

I guess I have never bought into the philosophy that just because it has happened before, it is ok for it to happen again.

We are going to have to agree to disagree on this. Three losses might be acceptable to you, but not to me. To each his/her own.

Not acceptable, but it's going to happen at least once during a season. There never has been and never will be a perfect hockey team.

Look at it this way, I think you'd rather they went through at least one losing streak in the regular season so they learn to fight their way out of it and get it back together again. I wouldn't want a team to go into the playoffs having never experienced failure and then not having a clue how to deal with it. Adversity is a good thing, and you sure don't want to have to learn how to deal with it for the first time in the playoffs.

This is pretty much what I expected to happen when I wrote the column about it two weeks ago. I don't see it as the end of the world, just another opportunity.

Perfect example..the Detroit redwings..they lost 6 in a row earlier in the year..did they sell the farm? Make trades? Fire the coach? Bring in new players? NO! They stayed the course righted the ship and are battling for first place..panic isn't always a good thing Andrea..
