Tailing the Komets

So what do the Komets need more?

A 30-goal sniper or a heavyweight enforcer? You can't have both in one player because

Enforcer hands down. It's embarrassing to see our guys get pushed around. Mac can't carry the load all year when he returns.

With all due respect to the two differing opinions offered by Burgee and whole_n_one. Actually the answer is BOTH. I keep "harping" on the lack of scoring the K's have received this year. As I have stated before, I thought as the roster was being formed that this team would score a "ton" of goals. It just hasn't happened and now is the time to bring someone in to jump-start this team. The team also needs a player who commands the respect of opposing players. Blake, you're right, were not going to find ONE player to fill both jobs. That means even deeper cuts. There are players on this team that could get cut pretty easy. A couple are rookies, a couple are veterans. As we grow "attached" to the team we see on the ice every game, it becomes difficult to realize that some have to go. Not a fun job to have, thats for sure. Shut out last night by Dayton. That must have been a long, quiet bus ride home. The game today is against Flint, who is also having a tough time scoring goals. I would like to think that the team, knowing cuts are coming, will come out flying. I bet they play a full 60 minutes and pop some goals. If not, then this team is in a lot of toruble.

This years Komets= The Bad Boys Pistons after their back to back.
Injuries and age caught up to them very quickly.
Go up and down this roster and several key players from the goalie on out have had some fairly significant injuries or illness over the last 2 years. Huk, Chaulk, PC, Boucher,Bert, Warner and I am sure I am forgetting someone else obvious. But with the exception of Warner I believe the rest of them are all pushing the other side of 30 and even if you fully recover from those injuries/illness, your body doesn't always bounce back from it like when you are in your 20's.
I don't by into the whole "get an enforcer and the dirty players will think twice" philosophy. It is wrong. Sorry people. The dirty players will do their deeds when the goon is on the bench. And no coach is going to line match based on trying to keep his fighter on the ice to keep up with their goon.
Keep this in mind. For the MOST PART, the token fighters fight themselves and leave everyone else alone. They are there for all of the cliches. ...."send a message" ...." spark momentum"....."fire up the crowd". But most of the time they fight among themselves. Sure if they happen to be on the ice when something happens they will step in. But do you want your goon on the ice when Bouchard is out there just in case Bouchard MIGHT do something? There are very few first line goons in any level of hockey. That goon had better be able to play then! Otherwise the goals are going to end up in the wrong net.
So to sum up my long post. Get younger and worry about skill. Mac can handle himself and he can play. If you can find another like him great. But you can't waste a roster spot on a one dimensional fighter.

I'm with Burgeee...The regular season is to learn about your team and the other teams. We are in fine shape. Go K's

I think we definitely need a guy that can score 30 goals. The way the Komets are playing now I don't see anyone on the team scoring 30. If you look at championship teams they almost always have at least 1 30-goal scorer. In fact over the past ten years in minor league hockey there have been 53 teams that have won a championship and only 4 of those teams have not had a 30-goal scorer.

Shut out by Dayton? Looks like Randy wasted some gas money last night. We better win tonight because 3 straight losses to the bottom teams of the league..............not good!!

Superfan.....We have a 40 goal scorer out of the line-up right now.....You predicted Rick Varone would score 40 this season.

That was the kiss of death, he might be first cut next week.

I think once Mac is back, he will add the needed toughness and he plays good hockey.

The difference to me in this team is this.....sorry people, I don't like throwing anyone under the bus, but since Bertram and Warner came back, this team has become average. It has put guys like Rodger, DeAngelis, and Warner playing lots of shifts as forwards, and Stayzer too. We had Whitehead and Saidachev as forwards, now we have 4 defensemen sharing time as forwards.....and we have taken at least 2 solid defensemen away from their natural position when they were playing solid hockey, in DeAngelis and Rodger. When you think about this, it makes perfect sense.....we are weaker now with Bert and Warner playing. Sorry to say it. Nothing Personal guys and gals. And Leo needs to pick-up the pace. I like Warner alot, but not as a forward, and he isn't cracking the top 6 D-men right now.

This should be the lines:
Chaulk, Chewy, OC
Hulako ;), Shaf, PC Buddy
Thomas, MacMillan, Schrocky
Klempa, Stayzer (F or D) (Varone or Warner as the 20th man)

Deangelis, Phillips
Mironovic, Guy
Woodard, Rodger

I'm with Burgee on this, let it wait a couple of weeks or so and see what happens. Once people are back and the team balanced out if the scorers don't start scoring then it's time to look for that sniper. Goals have to be scored to win games.

Burgee is the voice of reason....wait, what am I saying?! LOL....but I do think we just lost 2 games, not 2 weeks' worth of games. Only my opinion, like everyone else's who has posted. but I think we are a little too early into the season to panic. When I drove home from the ice rink this morning, the sky was firmly in place.

And my son's team lost, too....4-3. And it's a team we've smoked twice before. I think they have us figured out. Time to change the game plan!

Littlejohn takes care of a guy that is a heavyweight and will score goals. Problem solved. And on the earlier comment about the age of certain guys playing a role.....I agree but one thing to point out is Boucher is 28 not "the other side of thirty" like the others mentioned. I don't think there's much one can do about a teammate breaking your finger in practice. I would argue age has nothing to do with that injury, just bad luck

What bothers me is the general lack of group energy and physicality. We have bursts of energy, like when we finally played in overtime on Sunday night, but most games it seems like the lines are just putting in their time. Body checks have almost disappeared. No wonder they don't announce checking totals at the games any more. The numbers would be very low. I believe that adding a true sniper would be nice, but you've got to do something to set up most any goal. Taking unobscured shots from long range doesn't it cut with any decent goalie. Camp a man, or men, in front of the net. Start getting ugly goals. It isn't how pretty the "shot" or goal is, it's whether or not the puck actually makes its way into the net.

Whoever they bring in (if indeed they do), just make sure the player comes with a heart and is willing to play hard game in and game out...

Or, maybe we just hold the fort (like last year) and wait for the injuries, suspensions, and call ups to return... Worked last year...

Put Mac on the top line. That will mean that the other team either matches them with their bad boys and we score or they match them with their top line players and Mac scares the you-know-what out of them. Having Mac on the third or fourth line won't help the top players - he will be on the bench while they get hammered.
