Tailing the Komets

Some more updates

``And we're starting to turn up the heat on a goalie or two,'' he said. ``Most of the talks we're having center around offensive forwards.''

As for the toughness factor, Franke said he thinks the Komets have enough with Lincoln Kaleigh Schrock, Craig Ceson, Dustin and Bryant Molle, rookie Stephon Thorne, defenseman Dave Starenky and rookie Adam Krug.

``If we're going to have a 10th forward tough guy it has to be somebody who can play,'' Franke said. ``I think we have enough toughness. We're not going to have a 6-5 goon who can't play because at the end of the day skill will win over toughness. We've got plenty right now and we still have two months before we play the first game.''

Franke said the Komets have not talked recently with free agent forward Justin Hodgman, and Komets coach Al Sims said he liked three players from last week's junior camp in Shelburne, Ontario. The Komets have invited forwards Fredric Korduner and Eric Yngwe, both from Sweden, to training camp.

They are also looking into inviting center Stanislav Dzakhov. Because he's only 18 years old, Dzakhov may be ineligible under CHL rules.

Blake said earlier this summer that Aquino would take about a 90% pay cut to play here.

I too think that Hodgman isn't out of the realm of possibilities. Mightbite surely knows.

How about Sebastian Thiniel???

With the names thrown out with toughness by Mr. Franke....I have to update my lines:

Chaulk, Apod, Schrock
Smith, PC, Thorne
Lapointe, Auger, Krug
Starenky, Eric Yngwe

Frankie, Cescon
Milam, D Molle
Mango, B Molle

Boucher, Joel Martin (dreaming)

So very glad to see the Komets taking different avenues to bring young exciting talent here.

Training camp this year will be more competitive than I can remember it being in years. That bodes well for the team working hard from game one this season instead of waiting until game 20.

Get ready everyone..... write this down... I am going to say something VERY positive about Colin Chaulk....

If....If.....If they go with a young roster and with a bunch of guys that haven't won here before then I think it was a GOOD THING they brought Chaulk back to provide experienced leadership. Because MOST of the entitled group is gone and the Komets are looking at so many kids finally, then having someone wth his teaching ability will be invaluable to this years roster. Much much more valuable than it would be if the "been there, done that" crowd of last year returned mostly intact.

doubt if hodgman winds up here , but if he does, very well could be the power forward and goal scorer that was missing last year. anyone that knows the game could see that he was a step above most the players on the ice both times he was here. he was very dominating at times . the kid is only 23 yrs old . as far as aquino, hopefully he never puts on a komet uniform again. no class at all.

Amen on Aquino.

Hit...You might not get Joel Martin but you might get a guy he played with, former Canucks 4th round draft pick Alexandre Vincent.

Here is a 6'5" goon who can play. 9 goals in 49 games.

I was going to comment he is much too old....

But you know, I looked at his stats, dude is still scoring in the neighborhood of 35 goals and 35 assists.

Had the best hands I think we have seen here ever in front of the net.

You know what you get with him....plays alot of offense and plays in front of the net and will take a beating, and will score alot of points.

He won't get back on the defensive end of the ice too often.

As long as the Chief isn't behind the bench.....all is well.

Snuff will probably have a nervous breakdown.

Y2K the next time he back checks will be the first time.

If it comes down to reaching that far into Komets past to bring a guy like that back I'd rather they start a vet short.

Speaking of that...why not? Unless the league rules state they HAVE to carry a certain number of vets why not give yourself the roster flexibility later in the season to trade for a vet you really want instead of settling for one just to fill a spot on the roster? I'd give it to a kid who has earned it and let him roll with it until he proves he can't.

Wow... Hit beat me by one minute lol. And we actually agree on his lack of desire to enter his own defensive zone.

Don't get caught up on his numbers last year. It is a league where goalies like Kevin St Pierre go to die before finally retiring.

I am just tossing names out there..And he is year older then Chaulk and two years younger then Drouin.

Mon, 08/15/2011 - 5:05pm

Might...
Klotz CAN play. But do they need another player of his type now? I wouldn't even really call him a good. It's not like he racks up 200 PIM a year. He plays under control most of the time but will protect the star players when he has to. But if we go with the thinking they need more scoring then I am not sure where he fits in. That said...get him in to camp and let him win a roster spot :)

I am pretty sure the solar system is 2 years younger than Drouin ;)

Now... if you ask me if I'd rather have DAB than PC at this point...heck YES.

Isn't he just the same as Cescon?

Not looking for a fight...but will fight if he needs to?

And Klotz gives you nothing defensively or offensivley as a forward. He is just big.

"We're not going go have a 6-5 goon who can't play because at the end pf the day skill will win over toughness." Bahahahaha! Instead, we'll bring in a 5-10 circus show mid-season, build him up on the big screen so we can sell some shirts and pull in a few more casuals who think they'll see some fights, then have him ride the pine game after game.

Mr Snufflupugus
Mon, 08/15/2011 - 6:03pm

Andy, look beyond the numbers in conjunction with the teams he played on. The kid is good. He was good in the Q, he was good in Odessa. In Missouri he was part of a circus show with a team that couldn't decide who it wanted to play. They went through like a 1/2 dozen goalies that year sometimes carrying 4 at a time. The LNAHL team he played on last year was horrible.

Bottom line, put him in front of a traditional good Komets D and you have a good backup goalie. I want Boucher to play 70% of the games this year. I want them to bring in a young but non rookie backup. Vincent would fit that role.

Fair enough Snuf, but I don't see why you take on a guy with those numbers, when there are PLENTY of goalies out there according to Colin and Nick on Sports-wise a couple weeks back. I'd guess there are guys available with better numbers. He's had CONSISTENT poor numbers of late. Yes, maybe he played on a week team. But consistently being on a bad team makes me wonder this: maybe he had a part in his teams not doing well; if there is a trend, which there is, then this is a possibility. On a bad team, to say that you have a great goalie, is a stretch. The team is bad because the players as a WHOLE are not getting it done.

Mr Snufflupugus
Mon, 08/15/2011 - 7:35pm

Andy I got you. And I wasn't necessarily saying this guy was then answer. But he is the type of developmental guy I'd like to see. I want a young backupdon't want a raw rookie. I want a goalie who has some experience including playoffs which he does just in case Nick has an injury or his play declines.

You are right there are several of these types floating out there. I follow the Q so I remember watching Vincent a few years back and followed him when he was playing in Texas a couple years ago. So when I was doing a search of possible availables and saw his name....
