Tailing the Komets

Some notes

Talked with David Franke today on his way to Kalamazoo to watch the ECHL Riley Cup Finals.

* The Komets are not talking with the Red Wings about an affiliation or anything else.

* They will be talking to Columbus again in the next few weeks.

* The Komets are using a scouting service to help them look at upcoming rookies.

* They have not talked to Todd Robinson, but expect to in the future. He expects Robinson to wait awhile before si

* They are probably looking at bringing one goaltender back, mostly because they need to find one for the future, not because they have any problems with Kevin Reiter or Nick Boucher.

* He said he believes Derek Patrosso and Tab Lardner are leaning 90 percent toward retirement.

* Colin Chaulk will start working for the club June 1 to get training in marketing, sales, player promotions and recruiting.

* The Komets are planning on using a sleeper bus more next season as they'll probably play a more diverse schedule.

* They plan on bringing 35 or so players to training camp.

* Likely won't start signing any new players until June, or at least announcing them.

That's about it. Nothing earth-shaking. Back to tennis results.

If not for anonymous bloggers and forums I never would have been able to figure out for myself that hockey was going to struggle to survive the economic downturn in non traditional markets. Thanks to those who went out on a limb with the information.

No one is trying to break earth shattering news, Snuff...Simply saying what's going on...You know, the whole point of a blog...WACKY!!

Thanks for the link GM....

"The first tier for small market teams would allow a max of $8,400 per week to play players. The second tier jumps up to $11,000. Bigger market teams wil now be required to share revenue with smaller ones."

This might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in hockey. If I were the ECHL, I'd be having a field day with this.

Why do these owners continue to support proven losers?

GM, you will know the real point of a blog when Snuff tells you the real point of a blog. Back to reading tennis results.

Blake, while you're in jail would you please say "hello" to the Bengals players for me? Thanks.

I totally agree with the comments of GameMisconduct, Hit Somebody, JungleMonkey, and RunningKomet.

This "luxury tax" system has got to be the worst idea I've ever heard. In fact, I have to believe there are more aspects to it that have not yet come forth. There have to be, for this makes absolutely no sense.

I must be crazy. I always thought if you put a winning team on the ice your attendance should go up thus bringing in more revenue. How do you attract a winning roster when other teams can spend $2600.00 a week more on salaries?

From the outside looking in, it seems like a classic catch-22. I save money by paying my players less, but I can't attract a competitive roster on that budget. I will ultimately lose games and attendees which will lessen my revenue, but will get propped up by other teams who can attract the better players. How does that help??

This league has got to determine its future. Does it want to be a single-A league or remain a double-A league? To try to rescue failing teams by artificially maintaining them reeks of desperation.

Dschebig, I hope you are doing well and would just like to respectfully submit that, even though it is May, this is when the news is being reported. I hope there is more to this than we know, for I am really concerned. Also, regarding the playoffs, yes, they are not over yet. But who cares? Whichever team wins will not be in the league next year (unless Bossier-Shreveport is one of the "luxury tax" recipients).

Don't know what happened but my post didn't go through. I was good and didn't use any bad language or anything.

Interesting that the league looks to be trying to pull something off here and the PHPA has yet to chime in. The CBA , along with it's salary cap, is good for this upcoming season, I don't really don't see how the league can go about changing things without the players approval.

OK sitting here at the K Wings game and there is not much different than a CHL game. It's not faster, not crisper passing, not better coached, but they do play more physical. Or at least the ref doesn't call anything! There is 7:16 left in the second and there has been four power plays, it's 7-3 Aces. Lots of late hits, clutching, and high sticks not being called. Fun game though!!!

Agreed, Hoss, on your comparison between the 2 leagues....I've noticed and commented on that several times.

I think this "sharing and caring" program is ridiculous....it's fine if the owners agreed to it, but the players did not. What I take issue with is that 2 tier player payroll structure. THAT is where this revenue sharing should be going, to make up that difference. How on earth do they think a small market team can compete with a large market team, when they can't pay the players the same? I am no businesswoman, and that just screams "FAIL" to me.

The whole idea of a salary cap is to put teams on an equal footing. As I posted yesterday, there has got to be more details to it than what has been reported. If there isn't then the Komets need to flee this league after the 2011-2012 season.

I never liked the idea that an owner could run more than one team. I liked it a lot less when S. Franke owned the Kansas City team, and also hated the idea of him investing $100,000 in Bloomington.

Snuff, you are correct when you said what a fine player John Anderson was. I'm glad they signed him and didn't pass him by for a younger player back then.

Mr Snufflupugus
Sat, 05/21/2011 - 5:42pm

Alan, different type of league and era. That league wasa AAA league full of aging "4A" players who had substantial time in the NHL.

Much different from a AA league which is supposed to be developmental and not a league for AHL washouts.

Ron

Hmmm...small market vs large market. Exactly how would that be defined? If we go by population of Metropolitan Statistical Area, guess which team is in the smallest market? Rapid City. Don't think they need a subsidy. Largest? Allen and Texas. Fort Wayne is 9th. Missouri, Mississippi, Tulsa, Dayton, RGV, and Wichita are all larger. If we go by average attendance, then we're just subsidizing failure and punishing success. No way this ends well.

GameMisconduct
Sat, 05/21/2011 - 8:55pm

You'd think with the news coming out of the CHL (Bloomington's hostile takeover, luxury tax, new cap, teams commitments to the CHL, etc) we'd get a story on that but instead we get a rerun?

andy sherman
Sun, 05/22/2011 - 3:25pm

Until there is a published report from the league stating that the cap will be changed (which I personally don't see how it can be considering there is a CBA in place stipulating the cap) I won't hold my breathe as to this going forward. No business owners can unilaterally change salary structure when a CBA is already in place. This could easily turn VERY VERY ugly once the players union gets involved.

Well said, Ron. I was wondering that myself, on how they would be defining market size. I'm sure we'll get details when they are available. It's not like Blake is not checking into this, I'm sure.

Blake Sebring
Mon, 05/23/2011 - 7:01pm

Actually, as I said before, I don't have that option right now. High school stuff has to take priority at this time of the year, and there's nothing I can do about it. Box scores, box scores and more box scores. Unless this is something that directly affects the Komets, I have to let it go for right now. That's life.
