Tailing the Komets

Strange first period

Komets trail 1-0 after Konstantin Shafranov and Sean O'Connor both hit the post.

Early in the period, Nick Boucher got hit up high and a buckle on his mask came lose. Nick flipped his mask off, expecting an automatic whistle, which Referee Ryan Carroll did not give him. It's in the rulebook that as soon as the goaltender loses his mask, it's an automatic stoppage in play. Then Boucher knocked his own goal off the moorings. It probably should have been a delay of game but they talked about it for three or four minutes and called nothing.

Then, late in the period, David Hukalo was skating into the Bloomington zone with the puck when he kind of slid to the ice an

The report is that Hukalo will be back to play later; Boucher tweaked his groin and has been replaced by Haun.

I guess the Ks needed to have possession before the ref could blow the whistle.

A lot of you aren't going to like this, but I like the way Ryan Carroll is calling this game. He's making them play and earn position instead of a parade to the box for a bunch of cheap stuff. He could have called a few dives, but he made them keep playing. Shut. Up. And. Play! Komets have simply got to learn to be more disciplined as far as penalties and defensively, which they are not.

You can have your opinion but the bottom line is they got it (Boucher" call right. They (Ryan Carroll) didn't compound one error with another. Give the guy the credit he is do. Had he called Nick for anything it could have gotten real nasty. He may have taken a little long to explain his call but He got it 100% right. That takes guts in front 8,000 people.

I'm cloudy on this. Didn't the Komets have to regain possesion of the puck for thier to be a whistle to stop play? I'm asking because I'm not 100% sure. If thats the case, a delay of game should have been called. But as I said, I'm not 100% clear on the rule. It seems like its open to interprtation.. It also reads that the opposing team can't score while the mask is off.. So why isn't it just worded that the play is dead once the mask comes off?

JM: I was under the same understanding as you about having to gain possession. I was surprised the ref didn't light Nick up for getting in his face like that. It sure looked like Nick touched him at least once from where I was sitting.

Touching a ref doesnt equal a penalty. Abuse does. No abuse=no call.

Ok the ref got it right...I agree but it took too long to make up his mind. See you upstairs tonight Denny.

I don't believe the K's had to obtain possession of the puck for the whistle to be blown. This rule was put into effect to protect the goaltenders. Please, if I am wrong on this, let me know.
