Tailing the Komets

Talked to Al

He said the officials said MacMillan took Matthew Spiller's helmet off and then used it to hit Spiller in the head. He said he did not have any comment on the call.

Here's what he did say:

``We came up a little bit short again, but it was a good effort in the third. It was a very poor effort on our behalf overall. We gave pucks away all over the place. They must have had five or six breakaways. If it wasn't for for Bouch it would have been 10-2.''

Asked who played well, Sims said, ``Boucher, and the rest of the team wasn't very good. We just took bad penalties again. We're letting the ref come in and decide games because we're undisciplined, especially in the the third with a five-minute major.''

That major was MacMillan's match penalty.

This sounds pretty uncharacterisic of MacMillan to hit a guy in the head with a helmet. I could see something incidntal happening when the helmet came off and got caught up in the fight... I could be wrong, but I just don't see MacMillan hitting a guy in the head with a helmet on purpose.

Maybe thats what he had to do to reach the guy. He was fighting another 6'6" guy....

I don't get it- "good effort in the third but overall a very poor effort". Lets not make any changes. Don't forget Komet fans, we beat Quad City twice this weekend. No changes are necessary. What is it going to take to get another fighter in here? Mac will be suspended for no less than five games. I guess maybe we should have thought about this at the beginning of the summer when we could have went out and signed a couple of guys. We give up two power plays and a shortie....NOT GOOD!

And how exactly is a fighter going to help the special teams??
Oh I know! A fighter will put himself in the penalty box more often which will allow the Komets to practice their short handed tactics.

That's what Bloomy's announcer said after the game as well -- that he had heard from some witnesses that Mac had tried to hit the guy with the helmet, though he wasn't prepared to say if that was what happened for sure. Hard to say. People can do some uncharacteristic things if emotion takes hold. Just ask Haun. And it's not like this is the first time Mac's been in trouble, so... We'll just have to wait and see what the league decides.

After the 174th comment this week, I'm starting to think Snufflupugus doesn't care for fighting.

Not everyone does.

I personally will not pay to go to another game until I see that the Franke's show that they care about more than just money. My family and I would spend a good amount of money at every game went to, but it's not enjoyable to pay all that money to go there and watch our players get their butts kicked all over the place. The only player to be physical whenever is necessary is Mac and he rarely gets any help. And for the Franke's to say that they aren't interested in picking up another physical player just sickens me. They need to show that they care about the safety and physical health of our players and the fans rather than just the money. I'll still keep track of the team on the IHL website because I'm still a fan, I just won't give the Franke's any more of my money while they show it's all they care about.

I don't mind fighting. But how is a fighter going to help in a 6-5 game where special teams played a key role in the loss? It may be a solution to some things. But after every loss it seems some people think a fighter would have solved the problem.

Father timer has got the best of the vets and there is no diamond in the rough rookies, without a couple key pickups, i dont think its going to happen this year.

I think a few of the vets, Huckalo, Thomas especially stepped it up this weekend. The vet I would have like to have seen make an appearance tonight would be our backup goalie after the 4th goal went in. No knock on Boucher. 3 in 3 in three different cities is tough on any goalie let alone one who hadn't played in weeks.
I would like to see a physical, shot blocking, stay at home defenseman added to this team. But those are not around much at the AA level.

... Isn't Duffus the "emergency" backup ?? Though tonight might have been an emergency ... I'm of the understanding that unless Boucher gets hurt or ejected .. Duffus is just a spectator.

you are right Puck Bunny, Duffus is the emergency backup and only a spectator unless Boucher gets hurt

wow, I missed listening to the game tonight..whats up with this helmet thing with MacMillan? sounds pretty crazy. Is anyone else thinking this whole Mac as the rough neck thing is getting a little played out? I mean, to glorify fighting by making special shirts with his wanted poster on them??? that seems a bit much. He must have felt like a real rock star when he came out onto the ice Friday night. His fights that night seemed like just part of the "show." So that he could go out there and hype himself up some more. Is this guy just out of control or what? I actually thought it was kind of ironic that all his fans were wearing those shirts and he pretty much got his aSS handed to him in that second fight.

Haun goes after a player with a stick and Mac goes after a player with a helmet. If this keeps up maybe other teams will just plain be afraid to play against the Komets..............

Good weekend, 4 of a possible 6 points... Now lets regroup and start taking it to the guys at the top....

Will be interesting to see how many games MacMillan gets to sit this time... A match is an atuomatic 1 game and with his past history He will most likely see 3-5 games and wouldnt be surprised to see MR. Consistancy give him alot more...

Now will he get the same reprimand as Attila the Haun got in the paper???

Because MacMillan is the first fighter that the Komets have made t-shirts for... Oh wait... I have multiple Steve Fletcher shirts, a Steve Parsons "Kiss my Fist" Tour t-shirt, and several others.

His return Friday night was the most excitement in the MC in several games. Like it or not, he's the most entertaining guy in an orange jersey. Any guy that skates out and lays it on the line against a dude that is 7" taller and 60lbs heavier to entertain the crowd and fire up his teammates will always have my respect. He might not have beaten Goulet, but I applaud his effort.

I guess its society these days.. I watched the Survivor fianally last night and the guy who was deserving, and busted his hump to win gets dissed because "he didn't do it the right way". MacMillan is the only guy on the Komets willing to go out and do the dirty work, but some people don't like the way he does it... I don't see anyone else standing up and doing it.. If you don't like glorifying the fighter take a look at what happens when thier isn't one, Shaf gets his jaw busted, numorous cheapshots in multiple games... Like it or not enforcers are still needed in hockey, and I'm thankful thier is still a segment of the fanbase that appreciates what they do.

Unfortunately for Mac there is no one who will stand up for him. He will get beaten down by Mr. Commissioner because the press, the owner, the coach, and his teammates will not defend him. They didn't defend him on the previous ridiculous suspension, they didn't defend Haun, and they won't defend him now.

I am not going to tell you MAC won his fight with Goulet. What I am going to say is he didn't lose either. Once they got in the penalty box Mac asked Jason to go again and he declined. The next night in Quad City Goulet did not dress.I do not pretend to know why. I just will tell you to think about it.

Austin--If you really feel that way than you would be considered a casual fan. You must do what you must do. I am sorry we will not be seeing you at the games.

I wish I knew what Mac was thinking when he hit the guy with the helmet. Just not smart.

JungleMonkey, I didnt say that Mac was the first guy that they printed shirts for. Maybe before you reply to my comments you should actually read what my comments say.

I was actually more excited to see Shaf return to the ice Friday night. He has been unable to play due to something that wasn't his fault and it had to feel pretty good to get back out there. Don't get me wrong on the MacMillan thing, I was happy for him when he stuck up for his fellow player and I understand it would be hard to sit there and not do anything. I just hope he is out there to play and not just looking for a fight.

Blake Sebring

I don't think he was, and I in no way mean that as a slam at Mac. I think he was just in full fight mode -- as you have to be, and it just happened. It wasn't planned in any way. He was throwing and the strap to the helmet got caught. I don't think there's any way you can plan something like that in the heat of the moment. I don't know how that will affect the suspension.

Hey, I was just happy to have Mac there to stick up for my favorite player when nobody else did. I know he broke some rules, but at least he did something after he saw someone kick the crap out of the one guy who never fights and is always a gentlemanly player. Mac is probably the reason there was such a good turn out to the game on Friday,he adds a little interest and story to the season. You are always waiting to see what he's gonna do next and what punishment they are gonna dish out to him.
Glad to see Mac back on the ice Friday, but I was there wearing number 24 and cheering Shafranov on as he returned to the ice after his injuries.

Blake, have you talked to Brad or seen any footage of the incident?

Blake Sebring
Mon, 12/21/2009 - 11:20am

Talked to him a little bit last night, but I was trying to let him sleep today before calling. According to Bloomington folks, there is no footage of the incident.

JungleMonkey
Mon, 12/21/2009 - 11:36am

The team doesn't do a game tape? B2 didn't really show anything out of the ordinary during the fight, but its not like it was a zoomed in HD shot either.

Some of the Bloomington fans have posted that they didn't really see anything happen. One said MacMillan was "pawing at the helmet during the fight and it might have tapped Spiller through incidential contact during the fight"...

I didn't know if Brad elaborated beyond that in your conversation with him.
