Their terrible suffering will end

South Bend is facing the same thing Fort Wayne does -- raises granted to union employees leading to pressure to increase the salaries of non-union employes:

We understand the administration's motivation to catch up nonbargaining employees with bargaining ones. But in light of last year's call for and passage of an increase in the local income tax, the timing of the request has a certain tone deafness to it.

In Fort Wayne, the request for an income tax request comes in the same budget as the salary hikes, so that makes our politicians even more tone deaf, a malady that seems to be of epidemic proportions:

University President France Córdova said on Tuesday that she will ask the Board of Trustees on Friday to approve a 1.5 percent merit increase for employees systemwide.

This means employees would receive an increase based on an evaluation of their work. In addition, $1 million has been reserved for employee bonuses.

Legislators have carefully eyed Purdue's budget and tuition increases since trustees approved an additional $500 tuition fee on all incoming students plus a general tuition increase of 5 percent in 2009.
