The thrill has gone (to Texas)

Bobby Knight is apparently back in his element, creating basketball mania and then becoming the star of the show, only in Lubbock instead of Bloomington.

Mo matter what you think of Knight, you have to admit some magic has gone out of the state since his departure. Never mind all this Red State-Blue State political folderal. At one point, you could define yourself as a Hoosier by how you regarded Bobby:

1. Always loved him, always will.

2. Always hated him, always will.

3. Praised him for a long time, then ended up embarrassed for having been so willfully blind to his shortcomings in order to defend him.

Put me in that third category. I think it's fair to say few people were ever neutral about Bobby Knight. And, come on, isn't it healthy once in a while to get so passionate about something that, in the long run, really doesn't matter? Gosh, I miss the big lug.

No comments about Bobby? I guess this tells us a lot, there's no real passionate sports fans reading your blog or Bobby has been gone long enough that the general population doesn't care that much anymore. Somehow, I suspect that it is the former. As for Bobby, I thought he was embarrassing toward the end. And the way he went out, insulted by a student who called him "Knight". Good grief, I think it tells just how on the edge he was and maybe still is.

"3. Praised him for a long time, then ended up embarrassed for having been so willfully blind to his shortcomings in order to defend him.

Put me in that third category."

I wonder if Mr. Morris has any idea how soon he'll be entering that "third category" concerning El Supremo Presidente George W. Slow-Puppy? (Say what you will about Psycho Bobby K.; at least he didn't slaughter tens of thousands of his fellow Earthlings in an unprovoked war of aggression, as the war criminal currently infesting the White House has done.) Of course, he who blogrolls such gems as "Little Green Footballs" and "Instapuke-it" has already demonstrated a certain lack of elementary discernment ...

When I lived in Michigan City, there was this bar called Weidner's where we all went after work at least once a week. One night, one of our group, Mike, was trying to avoid an ex-girlfriend who kept calling to berate him over one thing or another. Mike didn't want to talk to her, so he kept asking others at the tabble to take her calls at the bar's phone. This went on for a couple of hours, which annoyed the bar's owner no end, as he thought the phone ought to be kept available for more important things. He finally yelled at Mike, "If you're going to be an idiot, please go be an idiot someplace else." I think there is a lesson for us all in that.

All right -- finally got a response out of Leo!

Of course, it was ... well, pretty much the response one might've expected from one whose blogroll is infested with "Powerline."

Don't worry, Leo, I'll give you a break for a while.
