Tailing the Komets

Tomorrow's story

Is about what it takes for players to come back from long-term injuries. I spent a lot of time talking with Pascal Morency and David Hukalo. It's always interesting to me how the effects of such an injury are as much mental as they are physical.

Nice article Blake. Is there any more info about Gabrielson wanting to move to forward and how his injury is coming?

Blake,

When will the referee's start to let the boys play and stop blowing the whistle all the time.
It really is making the game boring. It's totally taking the flow out of the game.

I don't know Eddie. Maybe the boys will have to start playing a little smarter and take it away from the ref's hands. I don't care what the solution is as long as their is one. The players definitely have to take a lot of responsibility.

When I last asked a couple of weeks ago, the Komets had received no offers for him.

I sent a well thought-out, according to me, e-mail to the Komets. I got back a reply from Mr. Sproat that stated that the Komets' agree with my point of view about the officiating and that they would be expressing my views with Mr. Brosal in a meeting this week. Sounds like maybe the Komets' might have a different view on things in this league than the other 9 owners in this league according to the e-mail. So blame could be shared with the owners in this league other than the Komet's and it sounds like things might change quickly due to the outrage expressed from us fans. I'd like to publicly thank Mr. Sproat and the Komets for listening to us fans and also taking our concerns to the league.

Hit, not that I am trying to say anything bad about the Komets or Mr. Sproat, but do you think they would say anything else? They do not want to tell the same fans that booed a call against the Flags that they are all for how the games are being called. I will believe they are trying to make a change after the UHL, as a whole, starts letting the games have a flow.

I hear you, I thought the same thing...my gut feeling is that maybe, just maybe the Komets were in the opposing minority on the decision to enforce everything that goes on by the officials. These are the same Frankes that have been vocal in the past about particular points of interest in this league and about certain calls such as the no touch icing play and many others. They are normally pretty vocal when it comes to their displeasure with the way the games are called. Remember Max Midendorf?

I will take them at their word this time. I did make a statement on the weekend that the League would be having an Emergency type meeting to fix this awful garbage that has been going on night after night in this league that was sure to ruin this league.

And they either have had that meeting, or are about to.

The perfect example
This is what we're talking about with the inconsistency in officiating. Saturday night 21 power plays. Sunday there were 10. Do you really think the Komets played that much differently? Granted, I didn't see the game, but I'm betting if you asked fans who were at both games which one they enjoyed more, they'd mostly say Sunday.

How can any league allow there to be such a disparity in what gets called like this in back-to-back nights? No wonder the players and coaches are confused.

I'm not saying necessarily that one was bad and the other good because I didn't see either game and that would be ludicrous, but I can sure point out the inconsistency of the style of calls and format of play.

I'll even say this: I think the level of officiating in the UHL has improved dramatically over the past four or five years. There's a marked difference in what it used to be. I think this year is a blip on that trend because of the new rules. Everybody is still trying to figure out how to interpret them, especially since the UHL wants the refs to not call it as tight as the NHL.

I'm just not sure some refs are getting and understanding that message.

Here's how much the teams played five-on-five Saturday night: 24 minutes and 50 seconds, including 5:13 in the first period and 6:40 in the second.

Lousy game
Guess I didn't realize fans are now paying to watch officials work. 21 power plays -- in two periods! Who is Derek Berkibile kidding? That's a disgrace. He must have developed a blister on his lip in the third period because he didn't call any penalties then. How is that in any way consistent? It's easy to understand why the players are so confused about what's getting called night-to-night.

Fort Wayne is now 0-4 when he refs a game, but I'm sure he isn't unprofessional enough to have any bias. I HATE jumping on the officials, but this is a bit ridiculous.

OK, following my own rule (name one bad official, name one good ref), I like the way Brett Klosowski calls a game. What do you think?

Can somebody give me an answer to this question? How can Frenchy win the goaltender of the week for two weeks in a row and Tom Askey won Goaltender of the month when the season started half way through the month of Oct and here it is the first of Nov? It makes no sense to me.

Compare their stats for October:

St. Pierre 4-1-0 2.61 gaa, .915 save pct.
Askey 3-1-0, 1.75 gaa, .944 save pct.

It's strictly based on the numbers in the particular month and usually announced the first day of the next month unless it's a weekend.

BREAKING NEWS!!!
From the AP:
Chicago Bears practice was delayed 2 hours this morning when several Bears players noticed a white substance on the field which was unknown to them. The FBI was called in to investigate and after a short time officials determined that the white substance was in fact the goal line. Practice was allowed to resume as officials determined that with Rex Grossman running the offence, Bears players were not likely to come into contact with the substance again.
