Tailing the Komets

Tonight's game

I have another assignment tonight so for a change you'll have to tell me what happened.

How'd they look five-on-five?

Who came out of the lineup for Rudenko?

Did Gabrielsen play any defense?

Did anybody go after Jason Payne?

Did Larry leave his mike on for the national anthem again?

Did Bozoian play?

How'd the ref do (remember the rule!)?

Here is the game info Blake wanted:

1)5 on 5 tonight I would say they had trouble again. Bloomington out-hustled them most of the game. Hardly any body checking and little physical play except for Lawmaster cheapshotting everyone on the team over and over again behind plays without Puke-a-Pile looking. Why the Komet's won't go out and beat the snot out of guys like Watson and Lawmaster is beyond me.

2)Hukalo sat, Gabrielson did not play, the new defensemen played so-so. Kiyaga seen little ice-time tonight. Lots of D-men were double shifted tonight in Kiyaga's place. Why not play Gabrielson as the 10th guy as he can do multiple things as a D-man or Forward. Syrocynski played very little. Maybe 3 shifts that I remember.

3)Gabrielson did not play, Honkenon played tonight, looks ok I guess.

4)Jason Payne wasn't there. Baker was a scratch too. Lawmaster is a freaking jerk.

5)Larry was mute during the National Anthem...He screwed up not playing the CAPTAIN CAVEMAN soundbite when he scored a goal. You Can Do It Larry the PA Guy!

6)Bozo was out.

7)Puke-a-pile called a penalty on the Komets 19 seconds into the game. I think that explains alot. He missed some easy calls, and called some incredibly stupid calls too. He called interference on Richardson when Bruce was blindsided into the boards and the guy that hit him fell down and Puke-a-Pile turned to see the guy fall and called it Interference. There must have been 5 legitimate "too many men" penalties that were called only once. Obvious all 5 times too. Once on a powerplay where Bloomington had 7 guys on the ice.

I will be e-mailing Blake some pictures of the Halloween Parade. Can anyone guess what Hit Somebody dressed as. It was the one that got the biggest laugh and even a standing ovation.....

I have pictures to send to Blake for you guys and gals to see if he would be so kind to post them on here somewhere. It is worth a laugh.

Bob had Mr Franke on the intermission and they were discussing some of the stuff I brought up about the lack of moving up/on of officials in this league. The NHL has no part in the training of the guys who work this league and there is no direct path for these guys to move on to the AHL/NHL. That does no good for this league or the officials who work in it.

The refs in this league, for the most part, are taking the air out of the arenas. It turned out to be a boring game tonight due to the lack of flow and the lack of physical play because I think the players are afraid to breathe out there in fear of a stupid penalty call. This isn't the NHL or AHL...you cannot call the game so tight. They must call only the big things and let the little ticky tack crap calls go. If they don't change quick, this league is in Dire Straits. Smaller hockey towns in this league will choose not to support that garbage. Let them play all ready!!! Wake up Dickie Boy Brosal!

hit somebody you just described the game and situation perfectly! all theses stupid calls are making for very boring hockey games. its too bad because i think we could have a very fun team to watch this year, the uhl is not affiliated with the nhl so forget calling it like they do! there is no flow to games and no potential rough stuff,

i thought towards the end of last year the league was even saying how they would like to see some more rough and exciting games and then this year they come out and tell the refs to blow the whistle every 2 minutes, they will lose fans if they dont change something!

Every 2 minutes....sometimes they blow their whistles every 20 seconds...It is mind blowing to me. Why are us fans so stupid about this...and the league is so smart? What is the best way to get the league's attention in this area? Does it do any good to email the UHL? I know Dickie and his boys think they are so good and so professional, but do they actually see what us fans are going through night after night in this Elite Professional Hockey League.

Memo to Dick Brosal...wake up fast or your so called Elite League will be dead. The refs in this league are pitiful! Bring back George Harrison and let him instruct the Refs to only call the big penalties...what I am saying is, Harrison was good at calling maybe 2 or 3 penalties a period and letting the play on the ice determine the outcome of the game. He was consistant too. This is the philosophy that the league must adopt or say bye-bye to the U!

Sat, 10/28/2006 - 8:31pm

UHL Idiot Ref of the Night Award has to go to Ken Gallagher.....28 penalty calls in the Flint & Elmira Game. I think the average number of penalties tonight in the league is somewhere around 20. This is very bad! It is not just Fort Wayne guys and gals....it is League Wide. The good news is...Fort Wayne has a Power Play Unit this season and will score goals.

Bob

Tonight the teams totalled a combined 44 minutes in penalties. Komets were 2 for 11 on the PP Bloomington was 0 for 6. Not as many PIM as Friday, but still a lot of PIM's. It seemed kind of strange that a penalty was called in the first 20 seconds of EACH period. But I'll take the win.

I would like to find out if the UHL has some kind of rules commitee or how the "points of emphasis" for each season are determined. It is easy to blame the commish but if he is not also the supervisor of officials the problem may not fall in his lap.
I can tell you this..I would have a "vet rule" for officials in this league too. I thought about this earlier today.

An official who has officiated 250 or more games in the UHL should be moved out, or at least he should not be able to return for a next season. With vacation time that should be 4 seasons. If you are not good enough to move up then at least you move to a different league.

bob
Sat, 10/28/2006 - 9:38pm

not sure if the refs are really that bad or just calling the games the way they were told to do so, who and where can we send our displeasure to at the league office, this has to stop! call the obvious and let all the little BS go!! we want fast action and hitting back!

Tony E
Sat, 10/28/2006 - 9:56pm

I believe the officials are calling the game the way they are being told to. Believe me when I say no officials enjoys stopping the clock every 3 minutes to make calls. There is an old saying we do not get paid by the call or the hour.
There is not a connection between the way the games are being called and my idea. But as I said and so did Mr Franke, the object of a low level minor league is to prepare players (and should be officials) to play at a higher level. This is a league for young officials to break into the pros. If the same guys hold their jobs for an indefinite period of time, then it is going to hold back the careers of guys who might have the ability to advance.
All that being said, it does not matter who is going to officiate if the league mandate is to call penalties at the rate they are being called.

Bob

Tony, Your idea has merit, but how would such a proposal be carried out? To me it seems like the UHL needs to develop a stronger working relationship with the NHL other than copying some of their rules and being part of the nhl.com network. These "points of emphasis" remind me of some the things the old IHL tried to enforce when it was trying to impersonate the NHL....we all know how well that experiment worked out! What I would like to know is...how does the UHL hire (or fire) its officials? I would think there is a minimum standard....

Sat, 10/28/2006 - 10:34pm

Bob officials go to camps to get noticed by leagues and that is one way to get hired in. They also draw out of the college, junior and maybe even high school ranks based on ratings.
Here is an article about two guys promoted to the NHL. You can see the steps their careers took. It is a long process.

If the UHL wants to be a development league to prepare players and officials for higher levels then fine take the vet limit from 7 to 3 and play more rookies and tweeners. This league will not survive in cities like Flint or PH where there is not excitement because the PP or PK are on the ice and the 3rd line players are on the bench. FW will always support hockey here just like we did last year with ave. Fri/Sat attendance around 7,500 but other cities will not support this type of hockey period. FW will be looking for a new home and the UHL will be a 4 to 5 team league. Just like the owners dealt with the "salary" issue they had better deal with Dickey and get this corrected quickly.

Payne was in warmups and if he was on the bench he didn't move the entire game.

I don't remember seeing Payne on the bench, unless he was parked down at the opposite end from where I was.

The PK looked good last night, the PP was a little sloppy at times. There was one play in particular where the puck was passed and I think I was the closest person to it! Somehow I don't think they'd let me jump out there and play it.

As far as the officiating goes, I counted at least four times Bloomington had too many men on the ice before it was actually called. Did Hansen deserve the misconduct penalty he got? Couldn't see the play from where I was... (Do I have to say something nice about another ref now?)

Last night the PT came out and played really hard and outworked the Komets. What I liked was the fact that the komets didn't lose thier composer and managed to shut the Thunder down in the last two periods. They still didn't look real good but it shows they can win the tough games.
