Tailing the Komets

Trade winds are calm

Komets General Manager David Franke had this to say about potential trades: ``Nothing biting yet. There's not really a lot out there, but we are really not offering a lot in return. Right now I don't see the perfect deal out there.''

As for filling any potential holes, as with Lance Galbraith: ``If Galbraith is out we'll just go with what we've got and do the best we can. If our veteran players play up to their abilities and we get good goaltending, we'll be fine.''

I am a little scared by this! If Lance is back in a few weeks, I am fine with no moves. If Lance is out for the season, we will be pushed around in the playoffs again and will get beat down!

Trade winds may be calm in the Fort but they are brewing in Danbury and Roanoke. David-Alexandre Beauregard will not be in a Danbury uniform. The Trashers will acquire 3 players for him. Best of luck to DAB!

We do not have anyone of value to give up and what teams want from us i am sure we are not willing to give up in a trade. This is who we have of value, but will not trade because it would be like cutting off our hand. Chaulk, PC, Goodwin, Luciuk, Dupuis, and Frenchy. The rest of our players are just "guys" that other teams already have. There is no way that we will part with these guys, nor would anyone advocate that we do. We can only hope for a diamond in the rough with a college player signing. This all will go back to how important it is to recruit more quality players and truly define what is needed to compete with the elite in the league. Funny thing is we use to be the elite in the league, now we maybe the 6th to 8th best team hoping for a playoff miracle. All I can say is Rumble is going to have to step up in scoring and physical play and become a pest. There is no real reason why he can not fulfill that role. I believe that Kelly Miller can play with a chip on his shoulder. Will see how it all plays out and hopefully Galbraith will be cleared to play right before playoffs. If nothing is really wrong with his knee, he will have fresh legs and that is worth it weight in gold come playoffs.

I'm waiting for Danbury to issue a challenge to the Bruins. They're probably going to double the salary cap. This is a joke.

David
Mon, 03/13/2006 - 3:19pm

DL I think you ment to say Danbury aquired DAB for 3 players. Vipers get tough guy Lewis, 221 pims, John Osbourne, and Fredric Belanger.

David

Well Blake is might be a joke, but unless the UHL is going to kick them out of the playoffs, then there is nothing nobody can do about. They are on a mission to win and have done in just 2 years. They have goal tending, scoring power, and a very physical and tough team. They pushed Rockford around all night Saturday just toying with them.

Blake
Mon, 03/13/2006 - 3:48pm

To me, this goes to the credibility of the UHL as a league. What are we, Major League Baseball? It's bad business.

When was the last time the Yankees won the world series?? Boy a K's danbury match-up would be fun to see in the playoffs, do ya think the fans would be into it???

Blake
Mon, 03/13/2006 - 3:55pm

Right now I'd be into any playoff series. That's the most fun time of year no matter who the Komets are playing. Last year was a blast.

Danbury ticks me off. How can they get away with this? They have a team full of high paid players. Are they all working for the garbage company that owns the team? Sounds like the mob to me. Anyone who wishes to play them is wishing for the playoffs to be over quick. At least we will all have credits on next years season tickets, right. May come in handy since the ticket prices went up again. How do we keep paying increased season tickets each year, but we are about 6th or 7th in the league spending for a team. The UHL needs to either grow a set and enforce the rules, or open the spending and rules up so we can put the best team on the ice that we can. How can the UHL justify this to the Fort Wayne Fans. I think maybe its time the Frankes take their team and move it to another league, fast. This league is heading to the sewer. What gives Blake?

Blake

I'm with you on that one, Hit Somebody. Remember a few weeks ago when I ranted about this very thing here? As I said, those who don't see it don't want to see it.

I will take bets with anyone that Danbury will NOT win the cup I don't care who they get. Being a suffering Leafs fan for years I have watched them try to throw money at problems at the trade deadline and it doesn't work/ It is hard to add 5 guys at a time this late in the season and get any team concept. What you end up with is a bunch of individuals not playing as a team and in the playoffs that doesn't work. Just ask the New York Rangers for the last several years. Until this year they bought everyone they could and haven't made the playoffs in years.

Tony E
Mon, 03/13/2006 - 5:58pm

I wanted to add, all that being said, the credibility of the league is at stake. If the rules are not the same for everyone, this league is in trouble.

Can we send a message to the league by either cancelling the All-Star game, or as fans boycotting it next year. Who gets hurt here, the Komets, or the UHL? Brosel is a real genious isn't he. We all see whats going on, but he can't, or chooses to look the other way. I think he is actually letting this happen because he needs the East Coast teams so bad to be competitive and build some fan base. But what he is missing, the most successful teams in this league are taking it in the chops at his expense. Look at us and Quad City. The two best markets in the league, allegedly, are playing by the rules and not able to compete. So take your All-Star Game and uneducated referees and stick 'em. And I pay $900 for season tickets to be cheated?

Blake
Mon, 03/13/2006 - 6:26pm

Brosal is not to blame. Remember he works for the owners. If they don't vote to enforce a hard cap, there's not much he can do. He's the one trying to keep everyone in line.

Mon, 03/13/2006 - 6:30pm

Blake is this true?

OK, stop using the word cheating. It's not cheating. It's allowed. This is luxury-tax league, essentially. Teams can break the cap all they want, as long as they are willing to pay the tax that comes along with it. (I will have a further report on this soon.)

Posted by: Justin Cohn | March 13, 2006 at 06:05 PM

If this is true, who is to blame then? Shouldn't we demand the Franke's to put the best team on the ice possible. Don't we have the highest attendance in the league? Why do my season tickets continue to go up in price? Why does everyone buy Komets merchandise like its going out of style for ridiculous amounts of money, if we can't put out a team on the ice that is more talented than Danbury, K-zoo, Rockford, Muskegon, etc.? What is the right answer here? Who is really to blame?

Blake
Mon, 03/13/2006 - 6:37pm

To me, it's cheating so Justin and I disagree on this one. Then why have a cap at all? It serves no point. Is it a salary guideline? Or can I decide to put a cap on my taxes? It either is or it isn't.

Season ticket prices keep going up partly because gas, sticks, insurance, etc., all keep going up for the team just as they do for you and I. Fact of life.

Maybe no one is to blame. Where does it say that Fort Wayne is entitled to 50-win seasons every year? Do you want to get bored like Quad City fans? LOL. Every organization has bad years. Another fact of life, though I don't consider this a bad year.

Remember how much fun 1991 was? Was that entire regular season a bad year? Wouldn't the playoffs have been a lot less fun if the Komets had won their division. Part of the glory of that team was that they were the underdogs.

Mon, 03/13/2006 - 6:38pm

Hey, I didn't say I agree with the system or that it's good for the UHL; I'm just telling you what the system is. It's not a salary cap; it's a luxury tax. Just like MLB.

Blake

How funny was Icy yesterday carrying off Eneman's hat? I haven't laughed that hard in a while.

Are you writing a story about the scoop guys? Hope Justin didn't see that. Whoops. Which one is the HUGE one?

Love the Enema Man. That guy has a crappy job. What a pain in the butt he is. You definitely wouldn't have to pay him crap to be our mascot.

danbury is just acting like the yankees and in doing so are following the rules in place. a soft cap means you can go over, it legal!! they just have to pay a luxury tax later on. in baseball the tax money is split with the other teams. is that the case in the uhl? my question is why wont we go over the cap? our attendance is almost double anyone else and we dont pay rent. just asking???

Mon, 03/13/2006 - 7:05pm

I would its nuts that the league has not heard or been made well aware of what is going on by some of the other clubs. That or some of the other clubs are not saying a thing because they too are circumventing the rules or breaking them outright. Maybe something to discuss in the offseason ownership meetings, no?

It doesn't really bother me that the Trasher got DAB. So what. Teams that play in leagues with caps should position themselves to be lucid during this time of the season. Supposeably we are close to the cap. And we have injuries out the arse right now that makes our team paper thin. Trades are not an option unless we totally snowball someone with some of our posse of "average Joe's" we have collected. Now if the rest of the best follow suit to counter what Danbury did and acquire difference makers for scraps, then I am going to scratch my head a bit on why we possibly couldn't of done the same thing.

We are 6-12 I think against the playoff favorites and outscored by 20 goals. Most of that success has been against K-zoo. I don't think the "we'll be fine" statement carries much truth to it. If those teams all load up to some degree and we do not, we still may have one thing they do not. Motivation. Can be a powerful tool when nobody thinks you have a chance in winning a series. Yes, I know I am reaching......

From my understanding the tax is in the range 200%. What does all that mean I have no idea we need to ask an accountant. We have to be one of the most stable teams in the UHL financially speaking, that is an assumption on my part. All I can say it is to late to make any impact deals, we had all year to either ignore the cap or to remain within the constraints of it. The K's choose not to ignore the cap and thus here we sit holding our, I can not say, wanting to blame others for stepping outside the lines. So let me get this straight, the UHL has a Salary Cap, but it is ok to violate the cap and basically just pay a fine. Let me see have chance to win the cup and pay the fine...priceless.

Scoops, you are right on. I read your entry and was shaking my head yes (SMHY) the whole time. This whole thing makes me mad. It sucks. I hate to lose. We have sat by the whole season like we are shopping at Goodwill when the rest of the teams are shopping at Macy's. This team is not hurting for money. We shouldn't sit by and watch our team turn into a pee wee team that is not exciting to watch, that doesn't hit, that doesn't score, that doesn't drop the gloves at least once a weekend. We are Komet's fans by-gum. We want the Jungle back. We want our "You Suck" song back. We have been told all year how things just can't be the same anymore and they have taken away our pride. I say we rise up, give the league a wake up call, trade the whole darn bunch of them and bring in the Red Wings. Pay that stupid tax. So we can all take a big drink out of that sweet cup.

Oh well, it was worth a try. Most of it is right, I think. At least we got Enema Man this year. That can't hurt, or maybe it actually could? I'm not sure.
