Opening Arguments

Uniform approach to education

The idea of school uniforms is looking better and better:

HAMMOND (AP) — Fed up with inappropriate outfits, the principal at a high school suspended 128 students on the first day of school as part of a crackdown on dress code violators.

Wednesday's one-day suspensions came minutes after doors opened at northwestern Indiana's Morton High School and affected more than 10 percent of the 1,200 students.

The offending attire — including baggy pants, low-cut shirts, tank tops and graphic T-shirts — are banned from classrooms. Students were also cited for cell phone use.

When I was in high school, the dress codes we had would seem positively medieval today. On the other hand, I just came across my graduation program and noticed that, right in the middle of the ceremonies, the Senior Vocal Ensemble sang "May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You." Something like that wouldn't be allowed within 100 miles of a public school today.

(Congratulations. You have just survived one of this blog's periodic excursion into fuddy-duddy land.)

Dress codes didn't seem to "hurt" us in school....hell, we even higher HIGHER graduation rates back then....

Do you SUPPOSE there is something to the notion that LOOKING like a slob (or a gangsta or a hooker) makes your learning experience EQUAL.
And won't people judge you by what they SEE?
First impressions can be SUCH a B____h!

Ah yes, the old school uniforms help you learn argument. Sorry guys, it doesn't and this issue only distracts from the real problems in our education system...

The NACS dress code states "Dresses shall be a minimum of 3 inches above the knee."

Now here is a school system that teaches mathematics and hopefully covers, greater than , less than and equal to. A minimum of three inches above the knee really should be a maximum of three inches above the knee.

Shame on these parents for letting their kids go to school in violation of the dress code after the school informed them before the school year began! And they were complaining because the kids got sent home??The way kids dress today is horrible. Low slung pants with their underwear showing, girls with low cut blouses, tight pants and shorts that BARELY cover their butt. It's disgusting. Go back to uniforms, maybe they'll act better and concentrate more on their school work instead of trying to audition for a fashion show.

Jeff....the argument is NOT that uniforms will help you learn, the argument is that uniforms take away a very real distraction which impedes concentration and thereby allow those who are able, to learn more. It's not about stifling creativity, it's about diverting their attention.

I remember how difficult it was at 16 to pay attention in class, I can only imagine how difficult it would be with a Christina Aguillera look alike on one side and Britney Spears on the other.
