"Jackalopes owner Rick Gasser confirmed that he had filed assault charges against MacMillan on Saturday night and asked for the Eagles

Maybe not, Steve. I'm just throwing out ideas here, but the team owner could approach this from the standpoint that DVD is part of his product (team) and is now a damaged good. I know it sounds harsh to look at people that way, but it would be an approach he could use. His team and the league are the ones who are going to have to pick up the bill for rebuilding DVD's face, so there would be your start concerning damages.

RK: Scenario you describe sounds more like grounds for a possible civil action. I think Steve has it right.

Could be. Like I said, I was just throwing out ideas. I haven't ever studied that side of the law. Plus everything I've seen written has just said that he "pressed charges", not whether they were criminal or civil. I should've been more specific. Good catch though.

Or.... Hockey has a long standing tradition of fighting. People get hurt. It's part of the game. Some of you may feel its an unnecessary and ugly part of the game, but its there. Minor league hockey hosts games called "Guaranteed Fight Night". How are you going to have a guy arrested for doing something that your industry promotes.

Police arrest people when the break the law. People asked the police on 3 occassions to arrest Mr. MacMillan, the police refused. This tells me that the police feel the law wasn't broken. Seems pretty simple.

Gillis is hypocrite. He coached one of the biggest goon squads in minor league history, the Danbury Trashers. Nevermind the fact that the broke the salary cap with "organized crime" money... Now he suddenly wants to make himself the voice of logic, reason, and ethical uprightness.. Hilarious.

RK, I think there might be a civil suit possibility by either DVD or the team or both, still think any criminal charges would be up for DVD to press which may be why no arrest was made. Pretty sure if criminal charges are filed an arrest has to be made, at least eventually so a hearing can be set, etc.

The only criminal case I'm familiar with (although I don't think it's the only one) happened in 1975 when Dave Forbes of the Boston Bruins hit Henry Boucha in the eye with his stick. Henry lost his sight in that eye and never recovered although he tried.

The State of Minnesota (Henry was playing for Minnesota and the game was in Minnesota) charged Forbes with aggravated assault. It went to trial but they ended up with a hung jury and never refiled on it.

In both the Mcsorley and Bertuzzi incidents what took place was so far out of the scope of hockey I had no problem with getting the police involved.
In this case though, while it sounds like what Mac did was a disgusting display of goonery, it does fall (in my opinion) under the of a hockey incident. I don't see grounds for anything criminal. I do agree with the idea that a civil suit might take place and if the CHL wants to send the right message, a LONG suspension will be handed out not just to Mac but to other parties involved.

JM - this is not a normal aspect of the game. plates and screws required in a face do not result from a normal incident. This should not be permitted in hockey. Mac was flat out wrong. Out of control. He deserves severe punishment. Criminal charges? no. I dont think so. I would hate to see that because you are opening up way too many other incidences to that sort of situation.

this is in no way normal physical hockey. even goons have lines they should not cross, and he best goons in history have followed them for the most part. Mac crossed a line. Now he should pay for it. sad but true.

I never said what he did was right. I've only stated that there are other factors that people aren't taking into account. MacMillan doesn't play 6 pro seasons and decide to lose his mind in a preseason game for no reason. DVD and the Jackalopes aren't innocent, they just got the short end of the stick. And as a "loving society" we have to take up for the less fortunate no questions asked.

I think a 20 game suspension is in order.

Criminal charges are ridiculous, it opens the door to nonsense.

A TOP MOUNT & BASHING SOMEONES FACE INTO THE ICE IS TOO MUCH :(
IT WAS NOT A FIGHT,BUT AN ATTACK

JM - agreed. criminal charges would be a bad idea.. Now listen, i do not believe Odessa was innocent either. I would bet DVD ran is yap. But that is part of his game. He does it and draws penalties off people losing their cool. But losing their cool being defined as a little slash here or there. A roughing penalty. In this case Mac went way to far... time will tell the extent of the penalty but i imagine a very large suspension. would not be surprised to see him gone for the season...

komets123...what happened to Shafranov on Halloween night last season could easily have resulted in plates and screws to his face. Something to think about....

@Blueline Baby....Thank you for bringing that one back up !! I was trying to forget about that ridiculous attack on my favorite player. But now that you mentioned it, I was thankful for Mac sticking up for him that night, but I knew at that point in the season that he was going to be out of control before the season was over. He showboated his fighting skills all over the ice last year and the people just ate it up. The WANTED t-shirts and all the hype when he came back from his suspension...whatever. I would love to see him come back here with his team this year and have his a$$ handed to him in front of all those people in the coliseum who were rockin' those Wanted shirts last year. Put him in his place and let him know he cant bully people and attack people the way he does. This guy has obviously got some serious issues he needs to work on.

Mac's a bully and attacks people?! OK. Whatever you say, Shafranov "fan". You sound more like a Lawmaster fan to me, but you call yourself whatever you like.

Mightbite, bashing his head on the ice really? And this top mount you speak of, when did that happen during this "fight" ?

Yet again false statements.

Tue, 10/19/2010 - 6:15pm

ShafFan, you can't have it both ways. You either like him for crossing the line and standing up for his teammate, or you think he is a bully and want his "a$$ handed to him" you can't praise him for being a Komet and than bash him when he goes away...like most others have.

Who's going to hand anything to MacMillan? Legault? Unlikely.

Schrock isn't going to do it.

Maybe the Franke's will bring in "Fight Specialist" Mitch Woods to take care of business.

no one on the fort wayne team will hand it to mac, they have all have a respect for eachother and with all of them NOT being goons, there would be no reason for them fighting. Unless they bring someone in...and Woods not being it.
