Veterans and salary cap

Everybody wants to know why the UHL regulates having so many rookies. It's because it's a way to cut costs, and that's it. Why do they need to cut costs if there's a salary cap? Very good question!

Sure, the league can package the rookies to say it wants to be a developmental league, but it makes lousy business sense for owners to go along with that. Why should they care about players getting the opportunity to move up, especially if those are likely their best players? What's in it for them, and there always has to be something in it for them.

Wouldn't you rather just see the best players regardless of veteran, rookie or tweener situation? Of course you would.

The salary cap is a way for underfunded owners to control costs, but it's also pretty much unenforceable. You'd have to be really, really stupid to get caught, and there hasn't been a salary cap violation in at least five years in any league. How can that be? Logically, realistically, how can that be? Everybody talks about it, but nobody ever gets caught? Then what are they talking about? Common sense says it can't be.

Everybody cracks on the league office about this, but how are they supposed to enforce it if the owners themselves don't want to enforce it? Send out commando private investigator accountants? The players sure aren't going to say anything. If no one truly wants to enforce it, it can't be enforced, especially by a league staff that is totally undermanned and overworked. I think Richard Brosal and Brad Jones have incredible integrity, but they can only do so much. Do you think a player is going to face being blackballed for the rest of his career by talking about it? Of course not.

And don't give me the ``Where's the proof?'' The only people who say that don't want to see the proof. You're never going to find the proof because these are private companies and they don't have to open the books. That's OK, but don't lie and say, `Well, so and so comes here to play because we win, or it's a beautiful place.' Get a clue. I'll bet if your boss came to you and said you can make X dollars here or less dollars here in this beautiful spot, you'd take the first offer. So would anyone else, including hockey players. And don't insult your own intelligence by talking about a soft cap, either.

I'm not trying to stir up a bunch of trouble here, but I read this stuff day after day and it's ridiculous.  It's far more important what the economic situation is for every team. These owners know what they can spend down to the dime. They have to.

There is no perfect system, and maybe this system is as good as it gets, but don't kid yourselves about a salary cap. Nobody is buying it.

OK, everybody start screaming.

Are you secretly Woodward or Bernstein? Is everybody the democrats? I get it, the league is Deep Throat and L.C.Walker Arena is the Democratic Party National headquarters. Best players must be code for Republicans. Are you shooting for the Pulitzer or the Espy, i think you get to go to vegas for the Espy awards.

Blake,

Still trying to get a response. You said we need a guy fresh out of college to step up and give us good minutes, well we have one if the K's would give him a chance. I have liked what I have seen out of Summerfield in the few games he gets to play. What is the deal is he hurt or are they just not playing him? I like his hustle and grit, he should be given more of an opportunity, I could think of a few guys he could replace in the lineup.

What do you think?

Actually Blake, I believe that two western ECHL teams violated the ECHL's salary cap and were penalized for it last season. San Diego was one, but I can't remember the name of the other team...

Summerfield is still on injured reserve and might come off to play Saturday if the Komets need a body. It's a little bit of both, injury and they just aren't playing him. They obviously aren't real high on him.

So why do you keep counting on the Komets to bring in a couple of college guys who can be a defensive star and a Massie type player? If they are never going to give guys a chance when they come in, what the heck is the point? And if everyone is cheating the Salary cap rule, why don't we have a better team? Why can't we bring in a top line player instead of the crap thay keep patching the holes with all of the time? Why do we always have to just be satisfied with what we have and never supposed to want more? If everyone is doing it, are we just cheating worse than the other half of the league, not to mention we bring in more revenue than the other teams do. 8,000 people against Flint, that is probably the total for 3-5 games for most teams in this league. What gives?

This is the part of the business I don't understand so I don't comment much on it. I do not like the fact how we divied up our vets. I would of like to have seen one more vet forward rather than defense, but thats me.
If everyone is thinking the other teams are cheating, then why are we doing something about it? If they somehow cannot be caught...then why aren't we cheating?

All I want is the best product on the ice. I want to see our city have the best product it can possibly have every single year. No more "well this didn't pan out like we thought". I want to see the best speed, skill, physical, and role players playing in orange and black. We should have the best team in the league every single year.
I also want to see the best overall product on the ice from visiting teams. Enough with teams coming in here that have no futures. Some of the teams come in here just waiting on the bus trip home. A few teams come in here and the next day either Juston or Blake says "didn't they stink or look disinterested?" Makes the league look bad.
