Opening Arguments

We're all winners!

And you thought public schools weren't turning out scholars:

At Beaverton's Westview High School, it'll take a bus to transport all 75 valedictorians to the Class of 2006 graduation ceremony.

[. . .]

Four years ago, the Beaverton school board voted to give extra grade points to students who took more challenging Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classes. The idea was to encourage students to take tougher coursework and to discourage students from taking easy classes that would give them A's and an easier route to valedictorian, Miller said.

But absent a districtwide policy, the high schools have applied different yardsticks to decide who's a valedictorian.

At Westview, Beaverton and Sunset high schools, leaders have decided any student with a 4.0 GPA earns the title of valedictorian. At Westview, that's one in every seven seniors.

I keep trying to tell my cats that if I give them treats all the time, they will no longer be treats.  My cats don't get it, either.

How ridiculous!
The standards have to be rather low at Westview!
