Tailing the Komets

What Al had to say

``You miss three breakaways in the first period, it's going to definitely hurt you and come back to haunt you. That's what we were doing earlier in the year. Lately we've been putting those things in. It was some of our best players. Russo out-played our goalies, there's no doubt about it, and he deserved the win.''
He definitely changed goalies, there was no injury to Nick Boucher.
``We're not getting big saves. Let's face it, some of the goals that are going in our building right now are not great goals. One or two of those a game, and if you're not scoring, you're going to have problems overcoming it. We need top-quality goaltending that's going to hold teams right now to two or less, which we've been used to all year. We give up four and we don't have much of a chance to win.''
``The seven minutes in the third obviously took us out of the game. That's just a discipline issue. MacMillan getting sucked in by Kostadine. He knew exactly what we was doing. He wasn't going to drop his gloves. You have to be smarter than that.''

I agree......but the problems are bigger than that Big Al.

There aren't enough guys buying in right now to playing sound hockey.

When this team plays aggressive and goes to the net hard and plays aggressive defense forcing the play.....they win.

When this team plays passive and allows the other team to dictate the play.....they lose.

I agree with everything he said but was the goaltending really that big of a part of tonight's problem? Maybe those guys could use some help out there. Why does he refuse to call out the vets who are making huge mistakes or lacking in effort too? Ya, he mentioned MacMillan and Woods, but I don't think you can put this loss on them being stupid. We're used to Woods doing something stupid (Hell, why shouldn't he? The Frankes obviously love his antics as much as the fans who stood up and cheered as he took his 7 minute penalty) he's done it for both of his tenures in the Fort. Why doesn't Al talk about our other vets who are giving no effort or heart out there since they have two rings already and aren't willing to sweat and bleed for a third? Yes I'm still frustrated.

FW, I think you mean MacMillan in regards to the 7 minutes. The way you wrote it, it looked like you were still talking about Woods.

Just a qiuck thought about the game last night. I was hoping that the increase in scoring was something we were going to see the rest of the season. Now it is evident that it was just a blip on the radar. For those of you who cheered the fact that the K's brought Woods in, remember this game, and the games earlier in the year when the goal scoring was so pathetic. Don't get me wrong, Woods as a player would've been great at the beginning of the season. However, at a time of the year when goals are so sorely needed, the Franke's should have and still should today, find a sniper. Not out there, you say? David Alexandre-Beauregard ( former Komet ) just signed with Tulsa. In England he had something like 44 goals in 54 games. He has scored everywhere he has played (including Fort Wayne.) Can't afford him? Work on the IR list, release someone ( I can think of three ). This team has proven through their play that they are not Turner Cup material. Sorry, sad to say it, but it is true. Not too late. Changes need to be made. Some may be painful. Watching the last two home games has been painful too. Oh yes, what happened to that "automatic" after Christmas magic. Ok all of you who will label me a "negative nellie", come on...but before you do, give me concrete reasons why I'm wrong.

I agree 100% with Al. I felt we could have been up 3 to 1 if we just finish breakaways. I felt the players worked hard most of the game and had good scoring chances. The difference was simply goaltending. I think too many of us are always critical of effort when we lose and never mention it when we win. Tonight Port Huron scored way too easily and that was because of poor goaltending. Port Huron's goaltender won the game pure and simple. We did not lose because of lack of effort.

Alan-- Nice comments but, you never say anything "quick". I do really appreciate whatever you write.

mightbite--We will do all we can to bring home a Komet win. The solution is really up to the players, however.

LMAO @ AL.. c'mon... Were the K's just about to mount a 4 goal comeback in the third?

MacMillan didn't get suckered. MacMillan got redemption and entertained fans in a game that was OVER.

Where's Chaulk?

Are we going to get another Bertram injury report?

If we have to hold teams to 2 or less goals to win, there is a huge problem.

Woods continues to be a disappointment. Larocque was available.. but we wanted Mitch. Mario has put up points, Woods has put up foolish PIM's.

When does Bobby Phillips come back?

Funny that a guy people called "Lazy Leo" at the beiginng of the season is the only vet out there busting his tail every night. Thomas is the teams MVP at this point.. Along with the two goaltenders that the Coach is throwing under the bus because the vetern leadership isn't getting the job done.

I agree with what most of everyone said, but I don't think you can praise Mac or judge how much the Frankes like what he did just because some fans were standing and cheering when he was taken off the ice. Remember, some of those fans were the same one that threw crap on the ice and thought it was a better use of energy to yell at Larry all night long while we were getting crushed by his team. I guess when you don't get to dance, you have to find attention someway...

Wendy: Good call. I did have a miss-type last night. I was frustrated, along with posting on here from my phone. Not a good combination because mistakes are easily made. Thanks for the catch.

My reference to the Frankes loving Woods was meant more for earlier in the year when they decided to bring him back thinking he was going to be the missing puzzle piece, although his past and present production said otherwise. I was saying that while the fans may be "entertained" by his antics, I'm not sure that's what the team needed/needs. I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm always a lot more entertained by goals and wins than I am fights. Think about it, a goal gets the loudest cheers from ALL the fans, has the big horn, wins games, and even has its own set music played afterwards (OK, so now Schrock has the Rocky theme when he drops his gloves). A fight gets some cheering (though I'd argue not nearly as loud as a goal), puts a guy in the penalty box, and gets you no points on the scoreboard. Besides, if you are just wanting to be entertained, join the kids and scream for Icy to come over to your seat as he walks around during the games. And before I get the speech on how minor league sports are all about entertainment and that is what keeps them going, I understand this and have heard it before. However, also remember the other argument we've seen written time and time again, Fort Wayne does not support losing teams. I guess the only extra point of entertainment that could've been added last night would've been replaying the little video of Mitch on the scoreboard telling the IHL to "watch out" because he's back... What a joke.

Well Mac certainly had no need to do what he did, but it was entertaining for a rather boring game. Schrock just amazes me. The kid plays his heart out every game to the point where they're double teaming him now.

So Mr. +/- king Bertram, was at least a -3 last nite. What is his problem. I just found out last nite he was married again. Now I know the problem!!!

Can the IHL make a rule change and widen the nets so that when PC has a wide open shot he can at least come somewhat close to hitting something between the pipes.

With exception to a few on the team. PUT A BODY ON SOMEBODY WILL YOU!!!!!!!

Funny thing is when a fighter gets high sticked with no call they usually find a way to "penalize" the other team the only way they know....

It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall and hear the conversations between David Franke and Al Sims right now. I can't believe that any GM would be happy with the coaching decisions being made. Al Sims can, as everyone says, throw the goalies under the bus, and declare that they were the source of last night's problems, but anyone in attendance knows that the goalies were only part of the difficulty. Defensive players weren't picking up their men and stopping shots from ever being taken. Offensive players weren't going to the net and placing accurate shots. No one was hustling, and in the last two games the Komets lauched some of the worst shots in history toward the general vicinity of the opponent's net. We were just lucky that the scores weren't more lopsided that what they were. Sim's is right to castigate his players, but lets be fair. Everyone deserves some blame. The players do for not playing up to their potential and doing what they know is needed. The coach does for not controlling and motivating his players. And the fans do too for cheering on things like MacMillan's stupid shenanigans that gave Port Huron a seven minute advantage.

I don't know about the rest of you, but games certainly aren't enjoyable to watch when the team simply beats itself. I paid foy my playoff tickets last night, but right now that really looks like throwing my money away.

Stan Drulia always seems to have a great game plan against the k"s, Sims needs to maybe tweak a little something to counter.

This years team seems to look and act like back to back turner cup champs, which they are. but, it might be tough to think that they will be able to flip a switch and turn it on come playoff time.

Woods is far from the only blame but it might of helped if he showed up in shape!

everybody is talking about how Mac's penalty was soo bad when really the way we were playing last night there was NO way we could have ever came back!! I think there needs to be some changes made... there are only a select few that skate hard and play balls to the wall anymore.. if we had a team made up of players like Thomas, Schrock, Chewy, and OC i think the fans would be happy win or lose because those are the only guys on the team that skate hard every shift and take the body!!

leo gets going on a break away then slows down and goes wide? With his speed he could have got off a shot or made the guy pull him down! We just got out played pure and simple. I knew the Icehawks would come out hard with that 9-1 blasting they took a couple weeks ago. We had two soft goals against us one each for Nick and Tim. When we play with gusto and go to the net hard we are real good....when we dont we are average at best. The net is 4 by 6 feet and we need to get open shots on that area....not 5 feet wide or 5 feet high!! We will play the Icehawks in the first round... but who will have the home ice favor??

Scarecrow, don't you get that money refunded if they don't make it to the playoffs?

Scarecrow
Sat, 02/20/2010 - 4:03pm

Blueline Baby, playoff ticket funds normally roll over to the next season ticket year if all the playoff tickets aren't used. Probably does the same if we don't make the playoffs at all. Haven't had to worry about that for a while, so I can't say for sure. I'm certain that you could get your money back if you didn't want to buy season tickets for the next season.

My comment about throwing away my money simply means that the way the team is playing right now the possibility of seeing a good champioship hockey series and advancing into the finals is remote. More likely we'll play a couple of games in the first series and then be out for the summer.

I'd love to be surprised. Go Komets!

Seriously Hossa.....that is dead subject. I have not seen anyone mention Warner, I believe he is not 100%, he is not the same player he was last year, period. He has been a problem. Not having Phillips in the line up has hurt a bit. Give Woods a break, he has not played for a year, at least he is out there playing hard, you never know, he may be a big surprise to some people soon and then who is everyone going to complain about.

Go Komets!
