Tailing the Komets

What superstitions do you have?

Have to wear a special jersey to the games? Let your hair grow as long as a winning streak is going?

Anything from real life you do?

My biggest one is I have a little glass cross that I always put in my pocket before I put anything else in my pockets, wallet, cell phone, whatever. I know, dull, but that's mine. Of course, I don't get emotionally involved watching sports any more, even the Bears.

I have to wear the first K's jersey I ever got to the first home game of the season.

Well, as a Boston Bruins fan, I usually fly my Bruins flag mostly in the winter (from Jan 1st to May1st). But, last year, I decided to keep the flag flying until the Bruins finished their season with the hope that my good wishes would somehow get from Philly (where I live) to Boston and help them win! So, this year the plan was to start to fly the flag in the same way on the same dates, etc.  But, after my first visit to Fort Wayne, I took my Bruins flag down and started flying the Komets flag with every expectation that the Komets will do as well this year in the playoffs as the Bruins did last year.

Too many to list (and not have someone think I am crazy) but one is wear the same jersey till there is a loss and then change it up.

Never drink out of any of my Komets mugs on a game day.

Parnell side, same parking fee attendent, even if it means getting stared at by the guy with the flashlight telling me to go over one or two lanes.

Park as close to the same spot as I can, probably get it 75% of the time.  This one started during the 01-02 playoffs.

Enter the arena proper through the same entrenced.  I moved my season tickets several years ago and still follow this routine.

I use to carry a looney in my pocket to the games but gave up after two seasons of early playoff exits.  It might still be in the Coliseum parking lot somewhere, I gave it a heave.

Tried replacing the looney with a twoney, lasted less then a season.  I might be sitting next to the looney in the parking lot......

I give the opposing goaltender the thumbs-down sign. Hey, sometimes it jinxes him and the K's score.

I think I've mentioned not washing my Komets hoodie after a win, but here's a new one. During the Christmas break in 2007, I found 10 little pieces of quartz in the foothills of Virginia. I've always had a thing for quartz, but it is also said to be a power stone capable of healing and dispelling negative energy if one believes in such things. I don't, but I like to keep an open mind. "Hey, why not?" -- that's my policy. I brought the stones home and when I'd listen to the K's play on the radio, I'd hold them in my hands and rattle them around, especially in tight games. I'd put them in my pocket when I attended a game. Needless to say, the rest of the season went pretty well that year. After the K's won the championship, I thought about splitting the pieces up by giving one to each of the principle players of the team, but I figured they wouldn't want them. I still have them on my computer desk, and I'm still convinced on some level that whether the Komets win or lose depends on how I arrange them.

By the way, in case anyone ever wondered, this is also the reason that I always wore a crystal quartz necklace on the Komets Game of the Week. That and the fact that it looked like it was made of ice cubes.
