Where do Komets rank in second half?

More than once I have heard Michael Franke state that the komets goal for the season is to finish in the top four of their division. Doing this would assure them of at least one round of home-ice advantage in the playoffs.

While there are plenty of games left and anything can happen, I believe that goal took a large hit with the loss to Bloomington on Wednesday.

Bloomington is one of the very few teams (if there are any other), that have played LESS games than the Komets. Bloomington, Missouri, amd Quad City have 55 points. Wichita has 54 points and Dayton has 50 points. The Komets have 47 points as of this afternoon, 2/18/11.

Every game the K's play against the above mentioned teams are "four point" games, and being that, it is imperative to win in order to gain ground. The chances to overtake Rapid city or Colorado are dwindling as the regular season is quickly being consumed.

My point is simple. Each game holds an increased importance for the K's if they wish to finish among the top four. The 3-1 loss to Bloomington was doubly injurious to that goal.

The rest of the February games (six), against Dayton (3), Quad City (2) and Evansville (1) will go a long way to determine where the K's will finish. The Komets will also need some help along the way from other CHL teams to hand these teams losses as well.

Is it impossible? Of course not. However the K's need to find themselves a new winning streak so as not to lose any more ground to their competition. They have played so well since December 22nd that the confidence is surely high.

Do I think they will make the playoffs? Undoubtedly yes. As long as the injury "bug" stays away and Columbus and Springfield don't upset the cart, I think they will qualify.

Where do they rank? That will be answered during the next six weeks.

P.S. I saw on the NHL Network that Columbus put two forwards on the IR and called up Moore (D) from Springfield. Does that mean Ratchuk will be going back to Springfield? I haven't heard and am curious. If you have the answer, please come back with a post.

I was wondering if anyone had any tickets they would be willing to donate for the game tonight? I am looking for a cheap date.

The last time Moore was called up by Columbus, that only left 6 active D-men according to the Springfield roster. When I looked this time they still show 7 active D-men on the roster, so they must have gotten one off IR or there was some player movement that didnt show up on thier transaction wire...

Keeping fingers crossed that Ratchuk stays, so the kid can at least get the playing time he needs...

OT, came across this and figured Icy needs to expand his bag of tricks:

Wow. That was like some of the MST3K episodes I watch. Except the mascot was far faster in his cheerleader munching than those 50s movie monsters ever were. :D

Weeks ago I said that I thought the K's would finish somewhere between 7th and 4th. I'll stick to that. 7th if their hot streak cools off, 4th if they can keep it up.

On February 9th the Komets scored seven goals in defeating Bloomington 7-1.

Since then the Komets have played four games and totaled seven goals combined!

Lets hope that the Komets are getting their "twine denters" out for this weekend.

I think what we're seeing is working in the guys who were hurt, re-melding the team. I believe they'll start clicking, scoring more, they have to don't they? I'll go along with Wendy's prediction.

Nice article, Blake...

I for one am not a fan of these computer generated rankings... I am one who would love to see college football get away from the BCS, can't stand all the new baseball computer crunching stats, etc...

Right now the K's are 12th in the league in points and 14th on this guys rankings... I think we all know how well the K's have been playing lately and how bad they were at the beginning of the year...

Good article, none the less...
