xxx marks the spot

We'll have to wait and see if this is a wise decision or not:

Unlike Indiana's other major colleges, Ball State University isn't trying to buy up possible school Internet domains names using a new suffix meant for pornography sites.

Other universities have paid for 10-year rights to domain names such as Purdue.xxx, Indianauniversity.xxx and Hoosiers.xxx in order to keep their names from being connected to pornography sites and to protect the schools' trademarks.

If a BallU.xxx site shows up, don't expect to find alumni news or course listings there. Just sayin.'

UPDATE:

Ball State actually has bought up some Internet domains names with a new suffix meant for pornography sites in order to prevent school-related names from being misused.

A university spokeswoman had said this week that Ball State wouldn't be buying site names using the ".xxx" suffix. Spokeswoman Joan Todd told The Star Press of Muncie that she was earlier misinformed and that school officials filed in October to secure the naming rights for ballstate.xxx, bsu.xxx and some variations.

When your school is already named "Ball," I think it's probably a lost cause.
