OK, I'll start then. When the Detroit Vipers joined the IHL during the mid-90s, they had these purple and light blue uniforms which looked really sharp up close but were a nightmare to see from the press box at The Palace, which was on the seventh floor, if I recall correctly. Because there was no piping around the numbers, you could not tell who was who from that high. I remember hearing about it from other writers, but when we got there, it was unbelievably hard to differentiate between players.

But it didn't bother Bob at all. He had watched warm-ups like always to figure out who the pairings and linemates were, and he ran through the game with no problems at all. I think he had to change one assist that night and that was all. I asked him how he did it and he said he could recognize the different characterists of the players that he recognized. It was an amazing performance.

The next year the Vipers made Rick Dudley sit in the press box during the preseason to pick out the new uniforms to make sure everyone could see who the players were.
