As of now you have to assume that all players in AHL camps will return. None are AHL contracted and with the lockout, and unless they just show ultra superior stuff, they will get caught up in a numbers game. The Komets still have six players in those camps. Two defensemen, two forwards, and two goaltenders.
Norfolk has been rumored ( reported), you choose the vernacular, to be sending up to five players to Fort Wayne. The Komets roster has some flex on the defensive side, but hardly any room up front with the forwards. Unless there are some injuries or retirements, or anything else that would would impact the number of roster spots, I think we better be prepared for some favorites either being cut or moving on. The math refuses to make sense without more roster room. Six in AHL camps + five being sent from Norfolk = 12 players,
Without knowing if you can refuse a player sent by Norfolk (or Anaheim), and assuming these guys are talented beyond this league, some tough decisions will have to be made.
For me, it would seem that Thorne and (forgive me) Schrock could be in trouble. Popularity doesn't enter into this. It is a numbers game with talent as the overriding condition and the challenge of putting together the best team possible. Not to mention that there are youngsters in camp already that could challenge, without question, for a roster spot that will probably be let go.
Thorne and Schrock are fast, tough, and aren't afraid to fight. We've all seen that and most certainly respect that part of their game. Problem is that they don't put up numbers and numbers may be the most important thing going into the new league and year. Just my opinion. I've got no problems with either. They play hard and both have great attitudes. I just don't see the K'd cutting Marino, Giosa, Chabot ( in fact, Chabot may be that tough forward who can score that we'were looking for so long last year), or Auger, Rizk ( if he comes back), Smith or Chaulk. Do you?
i deon't need to be reminded of the number of transactions that will take place this year. I remember some Puhalski seasons where the revolving door never quit spinning. Thing is, this year it will spin with talent.
Right or wrong, this is my opinion. Who would you sever from this roster?

you're forgetting the two reserve spots they can use and they don't have to keep a player from Norfolk if they can't cut it here. None of the vets who have been here before are going to get cut with the exception of possibly Gerry Festa if both of the other goalies are assigned here. I see them starting with 12 forwards, including two from Norfolk, eight defensemen, including at least two from Norfolk and two goaltenders. They'll use their two reserve spots.
Now if they get five guys from Norfolk, then there could be some discussion, but I don't see the Komets getting caught in that situation. Again, we'll see what really happens in the exhibition games. They could end up with two defensemen out of this camp, and a week later they could be gone if somebody else becomes available.
The other thing is, five or six kids from this camp could also come back if the NHL Lockout ends. That wouldn't surprise me at all.
