Maybe the Komets should look at hiring him as an assistant. It seems Gary could use some help.

Not a bad idea...I think an assistant can be a big advantage at this level.

Gary and Brian played together on Northside High school hockey team. Gary use to bully Brian back then, but Im sure they laugh about it today. It would be a good idea to hire him to help Gary out.

I'm not so sure.  If an ass't coach was in their future plans, they should've hired Chaulk while he was available.  This doesn't seem right to me (which probably means the decision has already been made).

This guy won't intimidate or threaten the current situation Alan.

I think Chaulk and Graham never had a great relationship, otherwise he might have been ass't coach.

Chaulk would have stolen some of Gary's limelight..... Can't have that!!........

I agree Blake. I hope that he has the opportunity to get a coaching job with a solid ownership one day. I wish him the best. Go K's!

Great comments by everybody!

When Coach Graham was hired, I certainly had my reservations.  However,  after his recruiting period (and success) and the opinions of some of my friends (who are much smarter than I), I changed my mind.  I have to admit that I am starting to 'waffle" a little with the record, the "calling out" of individual players,  and the leads given up which have turned into losses.

Be warned that I'm I  going to "speak out of both sides of my mouth at the same time", now.  I don't think an ass't coach is a bad thing.  I think having another Fort Wayne native around the team is a bad idea.  If Brian Gratz was the fired coach, of say, the Syracuse team (just an example), would the team be interested?  I don't think so. I have an opinion, and it doesn't rely on good reason, nor is it a factually based opinion.  It is a 'gut" feeling that I can't shake.  But its honest.  I'm not convinced that this team carries the respect for Graham that it should.  Bringing in another head coach whose success rate is questionable ( and it isn't important whether it's questionable in your mind or my mind, but the players' minds),  only adds to the quandry.

If the Franke's deem an ass't coach is necessary, helpful, would add to the success of the team, then  by all means go for it.  Just do it in a manner that brings the "best" people available.

I know my thoughts are convuluted on this, but even after reading through it again, I can't make it any better.

My problem this morning rests on the news that Hughes won't be making the trip.  Stories about him and flare ups on the bench with the coach, then skipping a road trip tempts me to read between the lines a little.  I hope I'm wrong.  About everything.

I have a feeling that the decision about Gratz as assistant coach has already been made.  Unfortunately, I am afraid the personnel decision has been based on the need of a job by the applicant and by the ease (including financial considerations) in securing the candidate.  I agree that an assistant coach is a good idea, but I do not think Gratz is the proper choice.  Hope the Franke's do not make the hiring decision again without interviewing any other candidates.
