Penalties continue to kill Komets

I'm not sure how the same team can look so different from period to period...

I think we missed a guy like Thomas or Clarke to grin out something in the second when we were in a funk.

Great third period and way to not give up!

I'm not sure that penalties hurt the Komets last night as much as the penalty kill.  Taking 5 penalties in a game is not uncommon, but allowing your opponent to go 3 for 5 is.  We just sit back too much on our PK in my opinion.  The few times we have been aggressive and challenged the puck this year, we have been successful.  Not sure why we always go back to the same thing.

As far as "Solving" Joel Martin, he isn't even in the top 20 in the league statistacally for the year.  Other teams have obviously solved him.  Maybe we should try something new, like putting bodies in front of him and aggressively crashing the net?  I know it's not pretty but it's better than doing the same over and over against him.

Bottom line is that, at this point in the year, we need to be consistently beating these teams who are in the middle of the pack in the standings.  I think we are the better team talent wise and we have more speed than they do.  Not sure if it is game planning, preparation, or what.  It is just frustrating to see us struggle against teams like this.

Way to undisciplined for a top team. The Komets have done it all year. This will kill them in the playoffs especially with our PK as poor as it is. Who does everyone think we get rid of in order to carry three goalies?

Without getting too impatient over one game, I think the penalty kill and the power play needs to be changed up.  Whether its personnel or systems, a realization that something is "broken" needs to be addressed.

During Wednesday Night Kent Hormann called one line "the helicopter line".  It was because the line consisted of three centers and no wings, ("no wings, get it?).  And somewhere in that desription may (I only said "may") be part of the problem.  The K's have only one line.  It is Faille between Embach and Szydlowski.  They have Perlini at center playing alongside Pistilli, but the other "wing" changes almost every night.  Severyn is available and so is Schrock.  But basically they have Lowry, Rizk, and Clarke (all centers) havibg to fill spots.  When Crowder returns (if he does return) it would make for even more to question.  Maybe some consistency is in order.  Maybe not.

These guys are all professionals.

Speaking of Hormann, he, again, mentioned during the broadcast that Faille had returned from 41 games in the AHL.  Justin said 27 in his article.  So I went to the Texas Star webpage, counted their games for Jan., Feb, and March (until about the 17th), and they have only played 30 or 31 games this calendar year.  According to the Komet website Faille was called up Jan 7th and played Jan 9th.  Justin may be closer to being correct if Faille didn't play every game he was up with the Stars.  Someone on this blog said they were a "personal" friend of Kent Hormann.  Maybe you can do him a favor and inform him of the facts to help him a little.  He isn't being wrong on purpose and I bet he'd appreciate it.  And if you're gonna get mad about this, then forget it.  I see him quite often at the games and have spoken to him before.

Tonight, my forward lines would be:

Pistilli----Perlini----Ouellet

Severyn---Faille----Rizk

Embach-----Clarke----Szydlowski

Tonight Lowry would be my 10th forward.   He could play on the penalty kill instead of Schrock and could be used on the powerplay.   (Here is the reason I would use him on the special teams.  Because he would be a guy to either take the faceoffs or to get the nod in case the Komet got thrown out of the circle).  Either way the K's would have an experienced center to win the draw.  Years ago I also felt that Leo Thomas and Colin Chaulk should share the ice on special teams for the very same reasons.

At least the lines above contain a center, a left wing, and a right wing.

The reason I moved Faille out and put Clarke between Embach and Szydlowski is that they have a history together and I think this simple move encourages a greater chance of scoring among all three lines.

If schrock is out for his pk work, he wasn't very good last night being out for 2 of the 3.
