Small surprises

Hell to get old, ain't it, Luther?

Although he was one of the early pioneers of Miami Beach's Memorial Day hip hop extravaganza, even Luther Campbell says he no longer makes his way to South Beach during that weekend because it's become too rowdy.

Grand gesture

The hour is getting late

Sigh. Ouch. Gulp. Or LOL, OMG and WTF, if you you prefer. Bob Dylan turns 70 this week.

Surf's out

One of the members of a one-hit-wonder band is gone:

Joe Pennell, a local musician who helped launch a local band to national fame in 1964, died Thursday at the age of 66.

Pennell was the lead guitarist for the Rivieras, a five-member South Bend garage band that struck music gold with their recording of “California Sun.”

No more rareties

We're almost in the era of "culture on demand" -- everything available all the time. Bill Wyman at Slate:

Slow down

Words of wisdom:

“With vinyl, one is forced to slow down and take in an album as a whole piece of work as the artist intended,” he said.

That's from a 22-year-old member of the digital generation on the joys of LPs and 45s, which are enjoying a resurgence. He likes new music on vinyl like White Stripes and Radiohead but the "old" stuff, too, like George Clinton and the Beatles. Makes me feel a little decrepit.

Indy RFD

Guess we know now what the Indianapolis Star does on a slow news day:

Country music star Vince Gill, who wrapped up a two-night stand at the Palladium on Wednesday, didn't make good on his plan to tackle the full-pound "Big Ugly" hamburger at Carmel's Bub's Burgers & Ice Cream.

RIP, Pinetop

Lost a good one -- Pinetop Perkins, one of the last Delta bluesman and the oldest Grammy winner ever, dead at 97. Here he is with LA Jones and the Blues Messengers way back in 1990 when he was just a punk kid of 76.

Yech

Sigh.

NEW YORK (AP) — The act with the most songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart isn't the Beatles, Elvis or Michael Jackson. It's the cast of "Glee."

In just 18 months of appearing on the charts, the Fox TV series has set the record for the most songs on the Billboard chart in the chart's 52-year history.

They're classics

Here's a fun one if you like that kind of music -- the top 10 greatest classical composers, at least in the opinion of John Althouse Cohen. The list is notable for going against the consensus of critics in putting Beethoven at No. 1 instead of Bach. And he puts Mozart at No. 2 and Brahms at No. 3, relegating JSB to No. 4. Even if we disagree with Cohen's arrangement of the 10, we can enjoy the links he includes (both audio and video) of pieces by them.
