Everybody knows small businesses are the major force for new jobs in this country -- even President Obama says so. But the selfish bums who own the small firms, citing petty concerns over high taxes, the increasing costs of doing business and the uncertainty of Washington's next moves, aren't hiring anybody. What to do?

No ban . . . yet

The statewide smoking ban won't pass this year. It got through the House, but the leader of the Senate says we're not ready for it yet:

But Senate President Pro Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne, said Wednesday he expects the state will eventually adopt a ban.

“As you see more and more counties and cities passing smoking bans, the opportunity for a statewide ban increases and will gain momentum,” Long said.

To pretend and serve

Once might be considered a lark or a whim. Twice, the guy is serious about it:

A repeat police impersonator was convicted Wednesday night in his latest case, stemming from an incident in December 2008.

 

James Merket was found guilty of impersonating a police officer, a Class D felony.

Safe for diversity

As many as eight Army officers could face discipline for ignoring or missing plenty of signals that Maj. Nidal Hasan might pose a threat:

Hasan got passing grades and a promotion in part because disturbing information about his behavior and performance was not recorded by superiors or properly passed to others who might have stepped in, the report found.
