The Fort Wayne Komets had to win the game twice on Sunday. First, Kalamazoo scored with no time on the clock, getting three shots on goal after a faceoff with five seconds left. The red light never came on because time was expired, but referee Scott Hoberg ruled the goal had gone in at 19:59. The Komets salvaged the two points when Mathieu Curadeau scored 3:33 into the overtime to give the Komets the 5-4 win.
Komets coach Al Sims said he never got a chance to protest the late goal.
"I assumed it was no goal because the red light never came on, but the ref ruled otherwise," Sims said. "The red light couldn't come on because there was no time left on the clock. You can't turn it on if there's no time left."
Overall, Sims was pleased with his team's effort as the Komets out-shot the Wings 33-23 which is very hard to do in Kalamazoo. Curadeau scored two goals, and the Komets' fourth line of Rick Varone, Maxime Gravelle, Sean O'Connor and Dominic Osman combined for three goals and six points.
