Komets beat Mallards 5-0

The Fort Wayne Komets are bearing down on the Port Huron IceHawks.

While the Komets were winning 5-0 at Quad City on Saturday night, Port Huron was losing 3-1 at Flint, knocking the IceHawks' lead over the Komets for second place in the International Hockey League to three points. The Komets have also played three fewer games than Port Huron. Muskegon beat Datyon 3-2 at home to maintain a 10-point lead against Port Huron and 13 over the Komets.

The Komets play at Bloomington today while Port Huron hosts Flint.

After losing 3-1 at Quad City last Saturday night, the Komets buried the Mallards this time. Fort Wayne led 1-0 after the first period on Frankie DeAngelis's eighth goal of the season, but the Komets completely dominated the second period. Fort Wayne out-shot Quad City 26-3 during the 20 minutes, out-scoring the Mallards 2-0 on goals by Sean O'Connor and Konstantin Shafranov. Both were power-play goals.

The Komets clinched the outcome early in the third period as O'Connor scored his second of the game and 11th of the season. Leo Thomas later added his 21st of the season.

Nick Boucher kicked out 19 Quad City shots for the shutout. Fort Wayne out-shot Quad City 44-19.

The Komets have won three of their last four games and are 12-11-1 on the road this season. They are 5-3-1 over their last nine road games. The next Fort Wayne home game is Wednesday against Bloomington.
