After a 49-year career, Roy Chin retired from officiating hockey games. His pupils are scattered throughout the Midwest and yes, even in the NHL. Roy taught more than how to officiate, he coached the character of the official. Patience, alertness, lack of arrogance, and open communication are at the core of success as an official. Roy was inducted into the Indiana High School Hall of Fame in 2002 and, in 2003, he received the Chet Stewart Award for lifetime achievement from USA Hockey. And all that knew Roy found he was a great friend who carried what was great in all sports. That pure spirit and fairness for all to compete and enjoy the game. Roy passed away in 2009.
