Training camp opened this morning, and here's what every player has in the back of their mind.
There are 29 players competing for 22 spots (20 active, 2 on reserve), which means some very good players are going somewhere else, probably by next Monday.
There are three goaltenders, and two will be kept. There are eight defensemen, and seven will be kept. That leaves 16 forwards competing for 12 or 13 spots. A lot depends on if someone gets injured and possibly takes one of those two reserve spots or it could also be a situation where the Komets may need to juggle some things to fit under the $12,000/week salary cap.
There are a lot more than 12 or 13 good forwards in this camp, including probably eight or nine who think they should be on the top two lines.
No one can afford a slow start.
