The International Hockey League (IHL) announced Wednesday that the Board of Governor's held an emergency teleconference Tuesday, November 4th and voted unanimously to amend the current injured reserve (IR) rule.
“The intention of the initial IR rule was to contain costs while continuing to strive toward having a competitive balance on and off the ice,” stated Paul L. Pickard, IHL President/CEO. “This early into the season, it was evident with the injuries that have occurred that teams were going to be playing shorthanded, which would diminish the production on the ice for our loyal IHL fans.”
The amendment to the current IR rule is as follows
* The addition of one 45-Day and one 60-Day IR spot.
* Players on both the 45-Day and 60-Day IR are exempt from the active roster.
* The duration of the 45-Day and 60-Day IR is a minimum of 45 and/or 60 days.
* Players may be moved from one IR spot to another (including from the 30-Day to the 45-Day or 60-Day) so long as the movement is upward. The original date of the injured reserve shall remain in place in such an instance.
“I tip my hat to the Board of Governor's for recognizing the importance of containing cost, but not letting it diminish the quality of play in the IHL”, stated Pickard.
This amendment is effective as of today, November 5, 2008 and will expire immediately upon the conclusion of the 2008-09 playoff season
