The Komets released eight players from their training camp roster Sunday morning and will have to make at least two more moves before Friday's season-opening game at Port Huron.
"It's not my favorite day of the year," Komets coach Al Sims said. "It's usually the worst. The one thing that was good about it was everybody said how first-class they were treated here and how they got a fair chance."
The released players are defensemen Vince Tarantino and Matthew Chromy, goaltender Tim Haun and forwards Ryan Potts, Tim Matheson, Adam Sinewitz, Adam Shirley and Roy Stevens. That leaves the Komets with 22 players on the roster -- 12 forwards, 8 defensemen and two goaltenders. The International Hockey League limit is 21, and depending on how the players fit under the salary cap, the Komets could go with a 20- or 19-man roster.
"These are the guys who didn't stand out in camp, but we're a tough team to make," Sims said. "With 11 guys coming back from a championship team, there weren't a whole lot of spots open. They'll represent themselves well, and some of them already have places to go play."
The roster currently includes six veterans -- Guy Dupuis, Colin Chaulk, Jason Beckett, Konstantin Shafranov, P.C. Drouin and Kevin Bertram -- and eight rookies. The rookies, players who have played in less than 60 regular-season professional games, are forwards Rick Varone, J.P. Roy, Maxime Gravelle, Samuel Bergeron and Olivier Legault and defensemen Danko Mironovic, Brian Boulay and Brandon Warner.
The Komets finished off their exhibition season Saturday night with a 3-0 record after beating Kalamazoo 3-1 at Memorial Coliseum.
"We've got to get our penalty kill and power play working every day and get better conditioning going," Sims said. "The usual stuff you start covering at this time of the year. We'll work on our systems every day and try to get guys doing things by habit rather than by thinking."
