1. It's bold, honest and unique.
2. The team really doesn't need to market to the diehards (and I define that as anyone who takes the time to read or write on this blog) because they know you'll show up anyway. You may threaten, complain, whatever, but you'll also be there because you are always there. It's part of who you are. I also think there are fewer of you than there were 20 years ago. We can debate all day why that is.
3. They are marketing to the folks who are not already planning to be there, and that's definitely the target audience of that ad. It will definitely get their attention.
4. It's also completely true. Look at the TinCaps. The vast majority of the market is the disposible income, family looking for an inexpensive good time, who go 8-10 times per year. That's who the ad will get. You've got to have a theme to attract casual fans to games today, and the Komets do that very well.
5. It's a discussion-starter and will get people talking, which is what marketing is all about.
Very, very interesting. I don't necessarily like it, but it's not going after me. It is bold and very effective and will do what it is designed to.

Hextall is listed on the staff page at the CHL's website as President/Commisioner of the IHL.... What he actually does at this point is anyones guess...
He is IHL Bob, the Minister of Information.
You know there are 8-10 TEAMS lining up to be in the IHL....
Muskegon is not leaving the IHL.
He is probably still working hard to keep the IHL together.
LOL
Ben, I looked back at the PIM stats for the CHL last season (very slow night at work...lol) and there werent too many players that we would consider "heavies"..... In fact there were only a hand full of fighters who were 6'3" or taller. There are some guys we already know like Carlyle Lewis, Adam Smyth, Steven Later, Robin Richards, Colt King.... In short, most of the fighters in the CHL last season were guys Mac's size...go figure...
Besides Lewis, the only big guy that I noticed with a history is Milan Maslonka that have signed to this point. As it stands right now, the K's seem to have more than enough toughness, IMO....
Ben, I think JR covered it, but here is a guy to watch:)

I think him & Mac could be fight of the year :)
amazing how a discusion about a marketing tool turns into another long tirade about how we deserve an echl or ahl team here. no wonder i dont do this much anymore. if you want the damn ahl here then put up your money and bring a team in, oh yeh i forgot, there are no franchises available right now. get off it and discuss the upcomming season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Giving away my age here, but I went to a LOT of games while in junior high and high school in the late 70s/early 80s. At the time, a "big" crowd for the K's was 5000+. There was a lot of uncertainty with owners (Bob Britt, Dave Welker, etc) and no atmosphere in the Coliseum at all. The one thing the Frankes did, and did VERY well, was make K's games an event. The result? The community responded, and continues to respond with great crowds every night. However, like any business, you always have to court new and potential clients to survive. No, it's not an insult to you presious STH who believe you should be consulted by the Frankes before each and every decision. It is simply a smart business move; let's recognize our past and look to the future to attract new fans.
Thanks Wendy, Olive Garden was great. Finally got there.
Chuck, stop feeding the troll.
He is the only person who said anything AHL/ECHL, and everyone else ignored him.
The longer you feed the troll, the more he will continue to show up.
In regards to not ihl fan and chaulkers post.. First can you define crap hockey for me? If either of you think that the echl or chl is better HOCKEY than the product the ihl produced , you are gravely mistaken. All three of these leagues are equal aa hockey. Seen them all. It is what it is .. AA hockey. Yes, I to miss seeing aaa hockey, but unfortunately not every city or franchise can be an ahl team or nhl team. Ft wayne fans should feel blessed to be able to have sustained a franchise for 50 years and to witness some very talented and entertaining hockey along the way. If you two bloggers and so called hockey fans hate the product so much.. Why do you waste your time and energy following the komets and this blog?.
Mightbite,
We also went to Olive Garden recently, it was fantastic. :) What did you have? I had the fettuccine alfredo with extra sauce and lots of freshly shredded cheese. It's one of our favorites for special occasions (can't afford it every day!)
I went to the Vegetable Garden and picked a tomato.
The frankes stepped up and bought the Flint Spirits franchise in the late 80s and moved it to the Fort when Moron owner David Welker took the original franchise to Albany New York. Which folded half way through the season by the way. So current franchise has only been here for a little over 20 years not 50 years.
Bob, that is what I had :)
Also seen a Komet player there, looked like he had been hitting the weights :)
I am still trying to wrap myself around someone said hockey was bad for the last three years.....
And JM, yes, the orange and black Vette along with the Komets call girls are excellent perks given to all of us in the sponsor department ;)
Glad you enjoyed it mightbite. I didn't realize you hadn't gotten to use it yet. What, nobody here is a red sauce man? Give me an entr
It's 50+ years of continuous hockey Non-IHL fan, time to change your user name btw. Which is not something you ignore, it's an abnormality in the minor hockey world.
Most of us realize what happened in the early 90's, hence the loyalty to the current owners. It wouldn't matter anyways, since they dropped that franchise in 99 and went into the UHL, so it's obviously pointing to the continuous run of hockey in this city.
I'm proud of that, and proud that the IHL2 is dead. Looking forward to opening night, anyone know when tix go on sale???
Eric T.... Just wanted to point out that the atmosphere in the coliseum during the time you speak of was GREAT!!! You had 3000-5000 HOCKEY fans in the building for those games who cheered at all the right times, boo'd at all the right times, and almost never left thier seats until a stoppage in play..... These people werent there for the side shows, mascots, etc... they were there for hockey...
Fast forward to today, we have a barn with a new raised roof and redesigned interior, luxury boxes, better concessions, a bar in the building, side shows, and an in your face society which all contributes to the current atmosphere. You can win cars, thousands of dollars, go play on the ice during an intermission, get zoomed around the ice on a 4 wheeler by Icy, etc, etc, etc.... (BTW, imo, the single most influential change that started the attendance boost for K's games was the change to designated smoking areas....the coliseum got all that smoke out of the hallways and arena itself and onto a smoking decks. That was huge!). This is where the Frankes have excelled...they found a way to bring the family' with small children to the games... All the credit in the world should go towards the Frankes for sustaining a successful and profitable franchise; but I still very much dislike this add....
First time on this blog and to let everyone know tickets go on sale the middle to end of September. I have called the ticket office twice and this is what they have told me each time. Also I have been a fan of the Komets for 30 years. Always followed them but never was able to go to any games until this past season and ended up going to about 20 games, including every game in the playoffs. And for all the negative things I hear on these blogs or anywhere let me say that going to the games is a rush. My son and I love them. And to be at the game that clinches the championship is a moment in life you never forget, even though it is only AA hockey. How many people here can say they were at a Super Bowl or final game of the World Series and their favorite team won while they were there? So everyone should be thankful we have a team with a winning history. Remember Port Huron, Flint and Muskegon? The other 3 teams who made they playoffs last year and aren't around any longer. I would bet those fans would do anything to have a team back even if it would have been in the IHL2. I for one am excited about the upcoming history and love the team that been put together. But another goalie would be nice.
Welcome KometKrazy!!!
Welcome KometKrazy--Please come back! Stay away from Burgee he is into little pills and suntan lotion and drinks way to many Foo Foo's.
I applaud the frankes for keeping hockey in the fort. What I dislike about them is they charge AAA prices for low level AA hockey. It's not hard to put together good teams when you draw 3 times the league attendance average. You can spend more for the good players. I'd like to see them win 3 in a row in a league where other teams draw around the same amount of fans. Go Rapid City.
Baaaarrrrffffffff!
55 days untill Komet hockey/21 days untill Colts football/5 days untill I get my Legault game worn jersey :)
True hockey fan..you should research ticket prices thru out the different leagues and you will find the komets are still some of the cheapest in the industry.. Also, just because of high attedence, this does not mean they can spend more money on players. The salary cap is still in effect. Can you please tell me the difference in low levell AA and high level AA ? I've seen them all and there is no difference GO KOMETS !
If the K's were to move today to the AHL, last seasons IHL prices would fall somewhere in middle of the pack.... I've done the research before...
A big welcome to kometkrazy!!! Good post krazy. TO NOTANIHLFAN I HUST WANT TO YOU......NOTHING.
Just wanted to say to you.....nothing. botched the above post...sry
B. I have done the research. I have posted it here a few times. I'll say it again. You can only compare ticket prices of AHL or ECHL cities that are around the same size as the fort. I'll give you the same example I gave before. Peoria Rivermen are in the AHL. Peoria is a little bigger than Fort Wayne but not much. With the exception of their very first row next to the glass their lower arena tickets are $22.50 for adults. The komets lower arena tickets are $21. Pretty close huh? I think I made my point. And i'll say it again since you missed it the first time. They can pay the better players to come here because they are charging inflated ticket prices for this level of hockey. A handfull of better players can make a difference, and has. ECHL = Premier AA Hockey. chl = lower quality of AA hockey. :-)
Baaarrrrffff - Puuuukkkkeeee!
