It would be nice to get a 40+ goal scorer. SAiunce we most likely do not have the $$ for that I would settle for a player cast in the mold of a Chaulker/Huckalo. Tough when he had to be, good defense and can put the puck in the net. The player needs to be real good in the locker room (A leader). If that kind of player isn't out there than get another very good goaltender. We haven't signed (or named) an assistant coach so there be some wiggle room with the cap. Coaches do not come under the cap. ( I don't think they do anyway)

You sign a guy like Greg Pankewicz. 30 goals 75 points and 250 PIM's a season.

Arent there a lot of alternate ways you can supplement the players though that would make the salary cap nothing more than a formality? Food, housing, job, whatever. Is that type of stuff monitored? Ive always been under the impression that the cap was just filler material for newspapers and blogs.

Take the goal scorer. He wouldn't have to be a 40 goal scorer either. If you can put three lines on the ice of players who score 20 goals each in the year, then I contend that there is no team that can defense you. It is real hard for any team to defend scoring that is so balanced. Every game one of your lines should be able to succeed.
As of now, not counting on any "surprises" by rookies, I count seven players who have proved they can score 20+ goals in a season. Thomas, Druin, Curadeau, O'Connor, Schrock, Petrosso, and Naurato. Two more makes you a formidable challenge for any team in the league.
I'm not sure what is going on with Warner, Dupuis, and DeAngelis, but they are talking to all of them. If they all sign, your defense is set along with Rodger, Mironovic, Phillips, and Cescon. This is premature, but even if only two of the three sign, I can't remember a time when the K's defense had been set so early in the offseason.
Nolan would be a nice addition and you would just turn over the goaltending duties Boucher and him.
So..... more scoring please.

No matter who Sims has on his team, it's going to be a defensive-minded team, number one. It seems as though that's all he wants to see for the most part.
With that, the goal-scorer would be a better addition because Sims would have them learn defense, knowing that scoring goals will be his second nature.

RK, I could be wrong on this but I think the only major abuse of the cap was in the UHL, especially in its earlier days after leaving the Colonial Hockey League. Quad City was a master at getting around it which is why it was supposed to be so closely watched in the IHL2. I'm sure the CHL has it well covered too but that is more an opinion based on faith then knowledge.

current team with price for all of them being the same i go with a scorer i suppose. IMO we are close on cap and i would think a goal scorer costs too much at this point.. I also think someone like Nolan would want to much money.. So enforcer would be the logical pick. .... tough question. good one

Not actually, RK. Those are all enforced through the league. I think there's a limit on how much you are allowed to give each player for all of those things, and your books must be open to league examiners at any time. Pretty much same for players. All that stuff is monitored, even whom the wives work for. That all changed about five years ago.

All of that stuff was before the League took over the contract approvals and paying the players. It got really tight when they that. I think (dangerous) the IHL had that system also. That was why the League released the names of signings before the teams did.

I believe when the Komets joined the UHL there was a salary cap plus an exception of one player who they could sign for any amount which wouldn't count against the cap. I think the Komets used this exception to sign Brent Gretzky.
I think a lot of teams did whatever they could to get around the cap. They were very imaginative. I think we can thank the Danbury Trashers, who absolutely paid no attention to the rules, ( and eventually got caught because of their legal problems ), for the strict salary cap -league supervision of contracts that we see today.

Blake,
Since the player signings, salaries, etc. are based on last season's salary cap if in the event (unlikely) that cap amount were to increase, would teams be allowed to re-work the contracts, or just save the leftover money for a "rainy day"?

I think D.A.B. was the most popular and least popular at the same time.
Everyone cheered when he went on the breakaways and scored. Everyone pulled their hair out when the puck was heading into the Komets zone and he was still floating at the other blue line.
Other unpopular players....Mark Fitzpatrick (wife beater), Mike Torchia, Peter Ing....any of those other goalies who could not stop a balloon in the 1990's/

I think most fans hated Scott when he played for Muskegon, loved him when he played here, then hated him again when he left. He set the minor league goals scored record and helped win a cup while he was here and I think most fans respected that.
D.A.B. who's that?
Connie Madigan could maybe make the list. When he played here the sweaters were the through-back ones they came out with this last season. I'm still considering getting one and having his name and number put on it although it's hard not to get one with Long's name on it. Maybe I can talk my financial adviser (wife) into both?
I remember one of Pembroke's first games when he cross-checked an opponent from behind and was booed by the fans.
