Plain and simple...
The reason the Komets ice is covered and other cities are not is because advertisers of the Komets know they are going to get exposure of 7000+ a night, excellent promotion by Scott Sproat and the rest of the staff, a competitive team that more often than not goes deep into the playoffs and the knowledge that the team will be there from one year to the next which leads to a loyal advertising base.
Most other cities cannot say that.

Why are you guys so sure the CHL is going to be around? I don't think you can guarantee any minor league is going to be around in three years, and that's just from looking at the attendance figures. I think you can make the point that only seven of the 18 teams are breaking even.

I know all about advertising as I've worked for several sports entities in this city and around the midwest. But, I have to say that I think we reached a little bit of an over-saturation point this year. Dial it back just a tad and let Larry and Icy try and bring the crowd into the game occasionally and maybe we can push the guys along a bit.

Hard to clap along with a commercial.

Costs go up and you want them to dial it back?
Where does the money come from to compensate for a sleeper bus, gasoline for that bus, increased insurance costs, increased meal money for these road trips etc?

To those who were talking about Musselwhite, I say: heck yeah....let the guy take a few hard shots!! But one thing I will point out is that a skills competition is a heck of a lot different than a game. No one blocking your shot or giving you an open-ice check in one of those... Might make a bit of a difference, but I've been wrong before.

As far as the sound system advertising goes, Alan, I can say for sure that the announcers at all sports do the same sort of thing in every single sport.....every single stoppage of play in every sport my family has ever been to (and believe me, we go to about 15-20 things each year, minor and major combined)....that is what you hear. And I guess I'm usually there having a good time anyway so I don't really care that much. But I'm a pretty good-natured person, so things like that don't really bother me too much. I can understand why they would bother others, but advertisers are trying to stay afloat in today's world....otherwise people like me and you will be out of more jobs!! :)

We went to Dayton, and their sound system was so crappy that you couldn't hear them.....perhaps the answer for you would be to move there so you at least could not understand them? Not sure if that would be better or worse for you, but I can tell you that their sound system sure made me appreciate ours so much more than I already do!!! Thanks, Larry!!!

In Dayton, it really depends on where you're sitting if you're going to be able to understand what is being said. I was also there on Saturday and sat in a different place than I normally do and had no problem understanding what was being said for a change.

Go to a NASCAR or NHRA race. You don't hear a SINGLE advertisement during the race and there are no advertisements on the track surface. Now, there are advertisements EVERYWHERE else you look, but not in your ears or written on the actual racing surface.

When it comes down to it, this is a simple issue of economics that we all know and have talked about on here over and over again. The best way to "vote" and show that you want changes with something (if you do) is to not attend and pay for it.

Scooter
Tue, 01/11/2011 - 8:48am

RK during the race how could you hear the advertisements? NHRA and NASCAR cars are pretty loud when running!

RunningKomet
Tue, 01/11/2011 - 9:32am

Scooter, that was my point. That is why you don't hear a single advertisement, because the cars are so loud... On the other hand, you also can't hear the person next to you. Pretty handy for those of you who have spouses who talk to much or that you don't feel like listening to ;)

I accept your apology Alan. I'll let it slide this time.

Mr. Snuff is right.

All of you who complain about too much advertising probably take advantage of the free things handed out at the hockey games, bobbleheads, posters, towels, etc. It's funny. "Stop with all of the free stuff I like and take every other game!"

I don't see what the big deal is about having the ice "just plain covered" with advertisements, I mean really. Is this causing you physical and mental turmoil? Talk about sweating the small stuff.

I'm more worried about how bad this season is.

I'm with Blake on the minor league hockey situation. I think we're getting closer to a situation where you are either hooked up with an NHL in some format or you're forced to exit the minor-pro status. Then again it could just be the economy...

I complain, at times, about the ice being covered with advertising (really, do we need 4 Wendy's advertisments on the ice?) and I don't take the free stuff. I wonder what category that puts me in?

Alan
Tue, 01/11/2011 - 12:55pm

No Touch Icing- We probably need to get something straight. I didn't apologize. My sentence of "Sorry if my complaint wasnt legitimate, No Touch Icing," was a sarcastic attempt to tell you, or anybody else for that matter, that no one is going to tell me what is "legitimate". Your retort of "I'll let it slide this time" reeks of some sort of superiority you must falsely believe. That crap doesn't work with me.

Brian, I was around at the time of the Komets moved to Albany. There were a lot of reasons for that move. The main one was the owner Welker. I believe he had a talent for making any bad situation worse. I spoke to Coliseum officials during that time and if you read Blake's book ( I believe it was the book on Bob Chase ) you will find a few interesting stories on how Welker operated and the problems he caused for the Komets and the IHL. While I acknowledge that advertising is important, please don't get the two issues confused. They may be somewhat tied but not nearly to the extent of forcing the Komets out.

BlueLine Baby, thank you for allowing me to live in Fort Wayne and not another city that may have less announcements. That is sweet of you and I appreciate it.

Mr Snufflugus, sure the idea that 7000+ people will see the ads cannot be argued. I realize that. My question ( and my point) is that when do too many start to get the fans eyes to glaze over and start to tune them out.

Seriously folks, there is a point where they may go over the line. Maybe it has happened already and maybe it has not. I would like to submit to you that when people start to tune the advertising out, then the advertisers are not getting value for their dollar.

Maybe it is starting to happen already. No Touch Icing, Brian, BlueLine Baby, and Mr Snufflugus have contributed their support. I respect their opinion ( although to be fair, at least two of them have told us they are advertisers ).

On the other side of the issue appears to be myself, Hoss, SuzKuz, Wendy, RunningKomet, and Caprad.

Honestly, I just wish the team was good enough that we could talk about how great they've been playing and taking guesses on whether or not we'll score ten Friday because we're that confident about how good we were. Or even throw in some "Did you see that pass?" along with a couple "How amazing was that shot?" questions... The good old days I guess.

It seems like the team is so terrible we're just looking for things to argue about (myself included) since there is no real hockey being played in the Fort this year, at least not by the Komets. Feel free to tell me how much I wish I was Brandon Warner and that I wished I was a minor league hockey player. Wrong on both counts, but I do miss watching good hockey. I don't think this is a problem with the league, or the style of play it promotes, I just think that the Komets aren't very good this year. Plain and simple. Of course, this is just my opinion.

Alan, value for the dollar is something every business looks (or should look) at each year when deciding how much to spend and where to spend it.
I'm not going to reveal my business here but I will say that I am not on the ice. My advertisement shows in a very good spot(in my opinion) of the game program and I have an exclusive spot as well as an internet presence. The on ice advertising is not something I'd want because my strategy is to target the casual fan who shows up to 2 games a year and will take a game program home or at the very least look at it while the game is going on. My exclusive deal targets the people I sell to directly so it is a win win.
If I could I would get my business on the pocket schedule which I think is one of the best places to have an ad but those spaces are hard to come by.
For the record (since it was brought up in the past) while I have received some perks over the years, my opinions about this team and the people running it have not been bought and paid for. Sure they have treated me and my family first class and I am proud to see my name associated with them. But I am also a small business which if the advertising wasn't worthwhile financially I would not and could not afford to continue to do it. Not even for occasional free game tickets or some of the other perks I have received over the years.
The Komets are good for my business. As long as that continues I will make sure my business name is associated with them.

Snuff,

Have you had a customer come to you and say they found out about your business thru the Komets? Curious how you know your sponsorship is truly helping your business.

For one thing, it's how we became friends, so it's more than made up for any amount of money he has spent, right, Snuff? LOL.

Small business in a "very good" spot on the program and also on the net...Pretty easy to figure out which company it is if you ask me

Thanks for the laugh Alan. I needed that.

It's just a non-issue. Really it isn't. I would bet your in the minority in this, minus this blog. But, hey, whatever. I'm interested in the product being played on the ice, not what's spray painted under it.

Although I would say that the way the Ks have skated this year, these advertisements might be the cause. Maybe they slow down to read them or look at them. The puck might be slowed because of the ads. But, I've noticed that other teams that skate on the Coliseum ice trip on them sometimes, so it might be advantageous...

Ok, I'm done. This is too much fun.

If the komets worked hard every night & lost,I would be happy with the product./ I wish we had more snow :(
/ I miss the "old days" when there was no advertisements on the boards or ice.But there is some pretty colors :)

The only problem with that "work hard every night and lose" concept is that unless a team gets some wins from time to time, they tend to lose heart and give up. It's human nature. I don't know if anybody could realistically be expected to give their all night after night after night when all they ever do is lose.

I come for the hockey, not all the decorations...

The only comment I will make about the advertising is as long as the K's adhere to the time limit for intermissions, then I have no problem with it all... It is what it is... Personally, I could do without all the stuff on the ice; but I "get it"...

Alan.. Hate to tell you but the two do coincide. It all boils down to money. No matter how you look at it.
The entire business model the komets bring to the table just compliments the tradition here. The two combined enables us to keep our team here. Some have gotten wrong over the years and some right. Whether you agree or not what the frankes have done during their tenure is to be commended. Keep up the good work

So does Snuff sell nuts and bolts...or does he sell central air and furnaces?

Those would be my guesses.

Lol would love to see the minority on this subject put their money forward and purchase the komets. Then let's see how much advertising money you turn down . Lol you wouldn't be in business very long. You too would be on the long list of failing minor league franchises

Although.. Lol.. I think whoever developed "thunderstix" should have one permantly inserted in their arse!

And those who use the lame "buy the team" line for everything should have that quote chiseled out of stone and inserted in the same place......

Same with the guys who use the line "I played the game so I am smarter than you".......

They should be nutted for that statement.

Can I say that? LOL
