23 B. Molle; 60 Milam

33 Boucher

Very general impressions: If I don't mention someone, it's not because they didn't do anything noteworthy, but it's difficult for me to see everything when I'm trying to take photos, video, notes, etc. It's a very limited view of the scrimmage... Rizk is a steal. Greg Puhalski was right in that this kid is ready to go every shift and he makes something happen every time. He's got decent size and he's always in front of the net. Obviously very well prepa... Chaumont is very quick and very smart. He was always creating problems for the defensemen, especially high in the zone. He'd be a pain in the butt to play against... Starenky is very big, and he allowed Dustin Molle to kind of cheat up ice a little bit and he took advantage... Thought the Black team defense did a much better overall job in the secimmage... Boucher looks incredibly refreshed and ready to go. He was relaxed and confident and very much in control. He looked like a No. 1 should. Kevin Beech had some tougher saves to make and I'm not sure he could have done anything on any of the goals... There's some size on the roster, enough that it really makes the smaller guys stand out, and not in a good way... Yngwe reminds me so much of Syroczynski in the way he plays it's scary, except Yngwe might be a better skater. If he plays on a line with Chaulk, he'll score 25 this season... As I said earlier, it was fun watching Leo and Colin go at it. They were physical with each other... There's really nobody who looks like they are out of shape and not going hard.

Frenchy peaked at an older age than Lawson.
If you strictly want to look at numbers compare Lawson in Fort Wayne to Frenchy look at Kevins worst season (2005-06) where his numbers were fairly close to what Lawson put up his one season here.
I can't compare the two because Lawsons time here and his career in general was derailed by injuries. For one season, and maybe more specific one playoff season Lawson did what Kevin could not do. That is put the team on his back and carry them to a cup. Some of the saves he made in the final game against Quad Cities still rank as some of the best I have seen at any level.

One thing that will be interesting is to see who they go to as the backup this year. I do hope it is a young goalie they can develop into a potential future #1 and not just a retread. That's why I don't want Sterling here even though I think he could do the job as a #1 if he had to. When they do replace Nick in the next year or two I'd rather they have a known quantity that has been in the system.

Kinda like Lawson, St. Pierre, Teskey, Reiter, or Boucher were....??? LOL

They haven't ever had a guy in the system to replace the last guy with. Whenever they have had a young guy here, they pass on him the next year. I am not faulting them...they have gotten pretty good if not great results from the guys they have brought in.

Actually Hit, and correct me if I am wrong....
Wasn't Lawson a young guy who was supposed to back up Pokey that season?
If my memory is correct he is a young guy nobody knew much about.
Didn't it end up being two young guys Lawson and Campbell that year?
If I am right he was the last young guy they brought in and yes for one season the results speak for itself.
The other guys including Campbell, Haun and Masters never did much of anything once they left here.

Ugh I type too fast...
Lawson was not a carry over. You are right about that. But he is a prime example of how it isn't a be-all-end-all to have a "known" retread as the backup.

Anyone that thought Eldon was going to play 40 games that season was out of their mind. He was 40 years old. I still laugh when I think about that. What buffoonery.

Was Lawson on the roster from the start of the season that year? I remember they went through several guys including dragging Duffus off the firepole at one point.

Geez, do I feel foolish!!

Let me explain.

I have been looking to find the spaceman everywhere. Who knew that, all along, he has been in Elmira's traing camp!!

That should have read TRAINING camp, not traing camp.

Jerseygirl, the above post with the error in it, would be a good example of me being a moran.

I recall Lawson being brought in after Pokey getting hurt...Lawson was cut from an ECHL team and came to the Komets in 02-03. We had 6 netminders that year.

Tom Lawson 56 3178 106 2.00 29 15 10 1176 0.917 3 7
Cory Campbell 8 425 16 2.26 6 1 0 153 0.905 0 0
Eldon "Pokey" Reddick 9 402 21 3.14 3 2 1 117 0.848 0 0
Parris Duffus 5 242 14 3.47 3 1 0 90 0.865 0 0
Scott Rideout 7 291 18 3.71 2 2 0 110 0.859 0 0
Joe Franke 1 11 2 10.86 1 0 0 4 0.667 0 0

So, to summarize, it wasn't a guy in the system.

I think we got Cory Campbell on a trade from Missouri.

Did we start the season with Scott Rideout and Pokey? I think we might have.

I think right now there is a glut of goalies out there. I would think they would want someone cheap at this point, maybe leaving some cash to fill some holes that may or may not appear. As hard as it is to be a player in today's minor leagues with so many teams going under, I think as a goalie and only having 2 per team makes things rough. :-(

Alan, I will send you my bill for ruining my flat screen monitor at your last post. ;) Classic Alan.

Sterling may have had a good game here and there, but I'd rather bring in my pee wee goaltender than have Larry Sterling ever play in a Komets uniform. My goalie plays with more maturity and consistency than Larry, and he does not let players and the crowd (small though it might be) get into his head.

Plus, Larry would ruin the tailgating parties in the parking lot. He drives badly.

If there is a tailgate party can me and my son come? Would love to meet everyone. By the way, what did happen to Haun? Never heard a thing about him when he left here. And Alan, it was a great post.

Haun went to Idaho in the ECHL, never played in a game and got cut. He retired shortly there after

"Head case" and "meltdowns" are generally part of a goalies job description. Just off the top of my head, Pokey Reddick, Bruce Racine, Peter Ing, even saw Ed Belfour melt down on Coliseum ice one night. The NHL has always had a bunch of them. Even Bouch has had a melt down or two.....

Not saying that I would like to see Larry as a Komet, but it's based on his age and slipping talent. Go back a few years and I wouldn't have minded it at all.

The "Internet Jungle" group on FB has a tailgate party planned in the Coliseum parking lot before the home opener. The Evansville fans will be joining the group for the tailgating. All great hockey fans.
