Opening Arguments

Alex will decide, OK?

This, put out of the MoveOn.org people,  is one of the stupidest campaign commercials ever. Lady sitting with a baby: "This is Alex, my first . . . John McCain, when you said you would stay in Iraq 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because . . . you can't have him."

Well, missy. Never mind that McCain didn't say we would be at war in Iraq for 100 years. The fact is that we have a volunteer military now. Get the concept? The military beckons. Some people join. Some don't. Many of the ones who do will be running away from domineering, smothering mothers. Whether Alex goes to Iraq, if we're still there, whatever we are doing there, will be entirely up to Alex, won't it?

Cheap cheap shot by Moveon.org.

I'm not the biggest fan of McCain, but he sure beats the hell out of the alternative. You like 4$ to 8$ gas?? Vote Obama...the war is a non-issue anymore....

One of us isn't really clear on the volunteer concept. For instance, on TV, they advertise the guard as one weekend a month and two weeks a year. So how is it that these guys get sent over to Iraq for a 12 month tour, and when the 12 months is over, they are told they have to serve months more before they can leave?

Never mind that McCain didn

Alex says quit speaking for me, MoveOn.org.

Alex also says no, Mr. McCain, you cannot have me. No, you cannot have my vote, either, unless you quit being a milquetoast and start being the maverick you call yourself.

Alex also says he looks forward to seeing Leo coming down just as hard on right-wing PACs when their stupid ads start running.

Harl...

One day you will finally understand that we are now in a hot war, as opposed to the cold war with the Ruskies. Ignoring reality will not stop the Islamic nutcases from pursuing their insanity which can end peacefully only when we can convince them that their path will only lead to their destruction ...and they only seem to understand death,

Casualties have thus far been amazingly small but we cannot stop now. Surrender didn't work for the Vietnamese or for our national honor ...and it will not work against barbaric hordes who would conquer the world in the name of religion.

This war is not about Iraq, it is about protecting our citizenry and the American way of life.

The lady who doesn't want her baby to serve needs to pack up everything and move to Iceland, Switzerland or France where governments are unlikely to fight for their sovereignty. She can take Moveon.Org with her. Perhaps the anti-war, anti-American lefties should also join her.

One day you will finally understand that we are now in a hot war, as opposed to the cold war with the Ruskies.

One day you will realize that the Constitution is the law of the land

Casualties have thus far been amazingly small but we cannot stop now.

Why?

There are lots of lots of subdivisions where every house looks the same. A guy drives home late at night, he's tired, and he turns down the wrong street, pulls into the wrong driveway. He enters through the open garage door, takes off his shoes, tiptoes into the bedroom, takes off his clothes and crawls into bed. His wife reaches over for him. He climbs atop her, and all of a sudden, when she starts MOVING, he realizes it's not his wife.

So is he allowed to leave before he makes her pregnant?

We shouldn't be in Iraq in the first place. We still haven't been told why Dubya invaded in the first place. And besides, we've already won. Dubya declared that in May 2003, aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.

So why are we sticking around? Could a bunch of jewish muggers convince you that you should get circumcised and start eating Kosher? Could a bunch of fellows on Pontiac street, armed with tire irons, convince you to start listening to rap music and wear your pants with the waistband three inches below the hip?

This isn't war, this is state-supported terrorism. It isn't about protecting our citizenry; Iraq never did anything to us, and wasn't about to.

If you can't stand the US Constitution, gadfly, YOU are the anti-American one. If you think it's important that you decide how Iraq should be ruled, why don't YOU move there? That's what democracy is all about, isn't it? Government of, by, and for the people who are governed, instead of government of them, by us, for the benefit of Halliburton?

My friend's son is 20, and today he starts boot camp to be a US Marine. He'll defend Alex and his mom. Alex's mom must think she's the only mother who's ever loved. Alex's mom - think of my friend, and think of Mary, the mother of Jesus. And look them in the eye and say "you can't have Alex." Furthermore - you don't get to decide, any more than Mary or my friend. Alex gets to decide, and I hope he has more sense of community and love in his heart than you do!!

Alex gets to decide

The same way Muhammed Ali was allowed to decide? A court sentenced him to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine for reaching the wrong decision.

"The same way Muhammed Ali was allowed to decide?" I thought we had a draft back then ?

You're right, Larry, we did. Just as we will in 2026.

Our "all volunteer" army isn't working out. For a while, hispanics and blacks were signing up because they had a better chance of advancement in the military world than in the civilian one. Since they've turned Iraq into the Hotel California ("you can never leave") with the stop-loss program, though, recruitment has really dropped off.

We used to be the most powerful nation on earth. That was when "peace is our profession" was the slogan, and the theory was that if you're powerful enough, you avoid wars.

Since then, administrations of both parties have piddled away that advantage. We let farm boys in Asia learn that they can bring down a multi-million dollar aircraft by throwing rocks, and let boys in the mideast learn that we're too cheap to put armor in our vehicles.

You can't bluff once the other players figure out you're holding two-seven off-suit.
