The arrogance of good intentions

Jimmy Carter continues to be an even worse ex-president than he was a president:

NEW YORK CITY —  Former President Jimmy Carter is reportedly preparing an unprecedented meeting with the leader of Hamas, an organization that the U.S. government considers one of the leading terrorist threats in the world.

The Arabic-language newspaper Al-Hayat reported Tuesday that Carter was planning a trip to Syria for mid-April, during which he would meet with Khaled Meshal, the exiled head of the Palestinian terror group Hamas, on April 18.

Meeting with Hamas! That ought to be worth another Peace Prize. Carter is so committed to his Habitat for Humanity vision of the world that he won't even be able to stop undermining U.S. foreign policy if a Democrat wins the White House.

Ummm....how can you "undermine" our current Foreign Policy?

the current policy is simple-do what Dick Cheney says or else.

So Kevin, you're cool with Jimmah making the trip?

Isn't the difference between terrorism and war a matter of following international law?

We haven't declared war in either Afghanistan or Iraq, and we're not providing troops to the UN. Doesn't that define our actions as state-sponsored terrorism?

I don't see why, logically speaking, it should be OK for Jimmy Carter to speak to Dubya, but not to speak to Khaled Meshal. If he can negotiate peace, fine; if he can't, he's not likely to make things worse.

But I'd like him back in the US soon. We need him to organize an international team of poll watchers this November to make sure the Ohio vote is a little more honest this time around.

Considering that Hamas is now a legitimate political party, thanks in-part to Bush's super spectacular Middle East democratic freedom march, maybe it's not a bad thing to try and understand their intentions a little better. Just a thought.

Craig, legitimate political party in what sense and in whose eyes? Maybe yours, certainly not mine. I don't consider people that slit throats, strap on suicide bombs and toss grenades at busloads of kids to be politicians. They are terrorists plain and simple and their "intentions" are a moot point, if their means to the end is to blow the frickin' bejesus out of everyone. Just a fact.

They're legitimate in the sense that they win elections, they garner support, and they currently hold power.

This time Jimmah will most certainly have the right answer for solving a Mideast crises. Upon reflection of his past experience in such matters, he recently told Wolf Blitzer that if he had to do the Iranian Hostage Rescue again, he would send in "one more helicopter!"
