Guess now we know the budget crisis is real in Indiana:
Indiana universities searching for ways to cut $150 million from their budgets by year's end say they're looking at all options -- including eliminating some sports or even academic majors.
"At this point, everything is on the table," said Tony Proudfoot, a vice president for marketing and communications at Ball State University, which saw attendance at its home football games drop more than 40 percent this year.
Even sports? Say it isn't so. Who wants to bet that they'll start lopping academic majors before the first sport is even touched?

If we were to turn these COLLEGES into venues that "graduate" ONLY people with athletic prowess (and nothing more), then that might be ONE way to go...
(kinda like an IVY TECH for sports)
I'd much rather opt for THE 3 Rs instead.
If the sports have to take a sabbatical...so be it.
In the long run, academics is always preferred...or at least it SHOULD be.
