Burton bogey

Rep. Dan Burton is at it again, or, rather, not at it again:

U.S. Rep. Dan Burton missed 19 votes in the House last month, including a measure on financial aid for college students, because he was in California playing in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic - a charity event he's attended 17 times since 1988.

The Indiana Republican missed the votes between Jan. 16 and Jan. 19, according to a review of a congressional vote database maintained by The Washington Post.

As those 19 measures were being debated and voted on, Burton was on the links in Palm Springs, Calif., competing in the annual winter golf tournament, according to a spokeswoman for the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

Over the years, Burton has missed other votes that occurred when he was competing in the tournament, including seven in late January and early February 2003, and five in January 2004.

You have to admire Burton's determination to do what he wants to and his knowledge that he can do it, no matter what anybody thinks. Who among us wouldn't like to take off and have a little fun while we're getting paid to be at work?

Now I've heard it all from Leo

I have to ADMIRE a politician (Republican) for playing golf instead of doing his job? Sorry, I don't admire the man. I'll let the rest of the sychophants take up the slack...

Re-read my post and try again.

And no, you absolutely have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to climate change. I'm sure you'll admit that to yourself even if you won't do it in this forum...

Myself, I detect hints of sarcasm and humor in Leo's claim of admiration for Burton's cavalier ways.

My own immediate reaction to this familiar scenario is that you all might be surprised how many senior managers around our own little Allen County probably sympathize with good 'ol boy Burton's golf habit and his penchant for putting serious work on Pause until he finally returns to the office from the sunshine and manicured greens.

Time and again, this type of prodigal manager will expect his staff to make up his lost time on critical matters left hanging, and to heroically pull Baby Jessica out of the well that he keeps throwing her into (probably on a long weekend which the staff had planned to enjoy in other ways).

Of course I could be wrong. Maybe nobody back at work was sandbagged by Burton's 19 missed votes in the U.S. House of Representatives... Ya think?
