Another way we know times are tough:
We all have heard of eggs "fresh from the farm". How about fresh from the back yard?
It's legal to keep chickens in Chicago.
One East Garfield Park resident who keeps five hens in a coop outside her home tells the Chicago Tribune the birds are "like pets with eggs."
Slaughtering the birds is prohibited in the city.
So what do you do for Sunday dinner? Drive the chicken out into the country? That seems kind of cruel. Oh, look, we're going for a ride. How nice. Wait! What's that in your hands? Stay away from me!
I don't mind a few chickens, but if I see pigs and cows in the yard next door, I'm calling somebody.

While it IS true you can't slaughter the birds in the city...who's to say they won't have an "accident"???
I mean...stuff(ing) happens, right?

Now we know what Reverend Jeremiah Wright was talking about when the referred to "America's chickennnns coming home to roost." Its the Chicago Way!
We live in the country and have a big yard, so when gas was very high last summer we joked with our neighbors about going together to buy a cow to eat the grass. We wouldn't have to mow, would have plenty of fertilizer for the vegetable garden, then in the fall could slaughter the cow for beef all winter. Hmmm, maybe we should put a chicken coop in the back shed. These days it pays to be self-sufficient.
