Dead heat

A toss-up?

A new poll conducted for the Club for Growth showed Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) and his primary challenger, state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, in a statistical dead heat.

Mourdock had a small advantage over Lugar, 34 percent to 32 percent, in the Basswood Research poll released Tuesday. But Mourdock's 2-point lead is within the poll's 4.4-point margin of error.

We should probably be at least a little skeptical of the poll. The Club for Growth hasn't actually endorsed Mourdock, but it's come out with a strong anti-Lugar. Still, it's interesting.

And there is this:

Sen. Richard this year has raised more than three times the amount of large-dollar donations from Hoosiers than either his Democratic or Republican opponents, according to recent disclosure reports.

Lugar had a large cash advantage at the end of June, with $3.5 million in his campaign account, compared with $213,583 for Republican state Treasurer Richard Mourdock and $685,838 for Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly.

Man, that's a big advantage. No matter what Mourdock throws at Lugar, the senator can punch back 10 times over.

That is a "ton" of campaign cash for Lugar, but it may not be enough. His "presence" on TV lately trying desperately to sound "tough" on The Chicago Jesus is ghastly.

My guess is it just reminds more people that he probably needs the creamed corn wiped from his chin by a nurse during feedings.

Heck of a nice guy, did some wonderful things in his career, but he needs to just go away quietly.
