Opening Arguments

Shhhhhhh!

Also reporedly under consideration: the dimwit ordinance, the dunce ordinance, the lout ordinance, the numskull ordinance, the blockhead ordinance, the dumbbell ordinance, the lunkhead ordinance and the lamebrain ordinance:

In an effort to help Seattle police tame unruly bar patrons as they spill out of the city's bars and clubs at closing time, the Seattle City Council unanimously passed an ordinance Monday that would allow cops to write tickets for fighting, making threats and creating noisy disturbances.

[. . .]

The idea for the ordinance originated with a nine-member nightlife committee formed by the City Council in late 2007. Members issued a series of recommendations late last year, Aldrich said.

[. . .]

Dubbed the "meathead ordinance" — a catchall phrase for the stereotypical bad behavior officers regularly encounter when bar patrons spill onto sidewalks just before 2 a.m. — the measure would be enforced between midnight and 5 a.m.

I don't know all they did, but being a member of the "nightlife committee" sounds like a pretty sweet assignment. Bet there was even some opportunity for "stereotypical bad behavior." I tried behaving badly in a nonsterotypical way once, but since nobody would join me, it wasn't much fun.

One would think existing laws would suffice (drunk & disorderly, public intox, disturbing the peace etc).

When in doubt, form a committee, manufacture a problem, pass a bunch of new laws and pat yourself on the back for doing something.

That's how legislation works these days.

Yeah, Tim, it sounds like the work of a committee, alright. And a 'nightlife committee' at that. Gotta love the name, though. Maybe Archie Bunker was a member. Still, there's little chance that a new law will get the kids to 'stifle it', if the existing ones aren't.
