Smart politics doesn't necessarily mean good government. Gov. Daniels' health initiative is clever politics because it puts pressure on the new Democratic majority in the House right from Day 1. It's a tax increase and big new social spending -- help for the uninsured -- both of which could come straight from the Democratic agenda. About the only response they can have is that this doesn't go far enough to solve the problem. It's not necessarily good government because -- well, it's a tax increase and big new social spending. For those of you keeping the "is Daniels a conservative or not?" scorecard, mark this one a no.

Just out of curiosity, has any politician thought far enough ahead to consider this:
Once you have forced us all to quit or drastically cut back, where do you think the money is going to come from to fund all the projects that have been heaped upon tobacco sales? That's one huge chunk of revenue that's gotta come from somewhere. It's gonna come from you non smokers.
Here's another little slice of irony...
once you get everyone to quit, think of the number of people who will live longer, which is a good thing, but where does the revenue come from to support millions more people for many many more years?
Well, it'll have to come from the pockets of all those folks dedicated to smoking cessation. And wait until they get that bill.
By the way, as most of you already know I am a staunch supporter of Governor Daniels but we disagree completely on this one.
