Walk softly

Drop the earphones, scumbag! I said, DROP THE EARPHONES, SCUMBAG! I SAID . . .

It's not uncommon to see runners and pedestrians walking or jogging with headphones on. But here in Arkansas that could soon be against the law.

State lawmakers have proposed a bill that would ban headphones in both ears near streets.

Tim Poole says he's seen the worst of what could happen while running with headphones.

Poole says, "Well a friend of mine she was running in her neighborhood and had her headphones on and she was hit from behind."

He says he always keeps the volume down when he runs with his headphones. But Arkansas State Senator Jimmy Jeffress no matter the volume, headphones are a distraction.

He's introducing a bill that would ban pedestrians from wearing headphones in both ears while close to a street, intersection, or highway.

Runner Charlie Moore says pedestrians should use their own judgment.

Their own judgment? What a concept. Bet I know what's coming next. I have personally seen people who cannot walk and chew gum at the same time. Before there is a terrible tragedy, walking and chewing gum at the same time should be made illegal. Calling Sen. Wyss!

Hmmmm....The LA Times story never mentions what political party Senator Jeffress is a member of. I wonder why?

Hmmmmm...

Guess you don't support seat belt and motorcycle helmet laws either. You know, this "own judgment" talk sounds great but there are those out there who don't use judgment, and without making wearing seat belts or a cycle helmet mandatory, these people don't. And it's not that I am arguing to save these people from themselves but their lack of judgment costs me more in my insurance premiums, for example. Why should I pay more because people are irresponsible; I don't want to, and if that means it takes a law to make someone buckle up or take off the earphones because they can't hear me driving through an intersection and I wind up killing them, then so be it. Smokers, excessive drinkers cost me enough as it is. We just started here not that long ago with a smokers surcharge on our health insurance with penalties for those who smoke. This was after years of our insurance going up in large part because of people's irresponsible behavior. You don't force them to give up bad habits and these people won't.
And don't get me started on those who text and drive.

AJ, no I don't support seat belt and helmet laws. Natural selection is a wonderful thing, it thins the herd.

And Lord knows we could stand some herd-thinnin' these days.

Your herd thinnin' will cost me money in my insurance premiums. Thanks.

Yeah, but it won't forever Andrew, it's a self fulfilling ritual thank God. Eventually, the stupid people kill themselves and go away, whereas government programs (like ObumbleCare) last forever once allowed to stand.
